Volunteer Activities• Campground Host • Trail/Campground Maintenance • Visitor Information • General Assistance DescriptionAbout Datil Well Campground: Datil Well Campground is in west-central New Mexico at the intersection of U.S. Route 60 and New Mexico State Road 12, in Datil, New Mexico.  The town of Datil and Datil Well campground lay along the Magdalena Stock Driveway. The driveway, which had wells spaced every ten miles along its length, was used by ranchers during the late 19th to mid-20th century as they drove sheep and cattle from Springerville, Arizona to the railroad at Magdalena.  Datil Well Campground is located at the site of one of the wells.  To the east of Datil on U.S. Route 60 lie the San Augustine Plains, the Very Large Array, and the village of Magdalena.  To the southwest, on New Mexico State Road 12 is Reserve, New Mexico, the Catron County Seat.  U.S. Route 60 westward from Datil, passes on to Pie Town, New Mexico, Quemado, New Mexico and to the Arizona State Line.  Datil Well campground has 22 individual campsites, and a group site with two shelters for large gatherings.  Amenities at the campground include potable drinking water, vault toilets, adjacent hiking trails, sites large enough for recreational vehicles with picnic tables and fire rings, Wi-Fi, and a small visitor’s center.  Though located off the beaten path, Datil Well can become quite busy.  Often on summer weekends the campground may be filled.  The group site is by reservation only and is filled most weekends throughout the summer and fall months.  Datil Well Campground is a U.S. fee area campground.   Qualifications: Host is encouraged to live on site and must provide their own travel trailer, recreational vehicle or living quarters.  The Host site must be kept neat and clean and reflect a positive image of the BLM.  Hosts should be friendly and able to work with people. The work is not overly physical but lifting full trash bags, cleaning, and operating an administrative use only UTV is required.  The position requires a valid state driver’s license. Ideally, the selectee would provide a 6-month commitment, but a minimum of no less than a 30-day commitment is required.   After three consecutive years of six-month volunteer cycles, the BLM may require a re-application process.     Site Host Duties:  Meet and greet visitors and provide general information to the public. Provide compliance checks and keep visitor use data. General campground management and upkeep, which include: Scrub picnic tables free of debris. Empty grills and fire rings of ashes, unburned wood, and debris. Rake and clean area around sites and stack unused wood by the fire rings. Clean and sweep the pavilion floors and sidewalks. Scrub interior restroom walls, doors, seat, riser, handrails, toilet paper dispensers with disinfectant solution. Sweep and mop floors in restrooms. Empty all garbage cans when full or when odor necessitates. Responsible for hauling the campgrounds garbage to location designated by project supervisor. Alert project supervisor when vault toilets need to be pumped. Maintain and operate visitor contact station. Keep project supervisor informed of materials needs, services required, potential problems, and any other pertinent information.       Volunteer Benefits: Hosts will have the opportunity to help preserve and protect public lands by providing services and education to visitors about public lands.  Datil Well Campground is a site of historical significance to the residents of the area.  As Camp Host you will become a part of the local community and be able to represent the BLM’s commitment to honoring the traditional use of Datil Well along the Magdalena Stock Driveway.        Consideration Provided by the BLM: The BLM will provide a camp space with sewer, propane, electricity and potable water hookups. The space is located within the campground, adjacent to the visitor’s contact and fee station.  A reimbursement not to exceed (may be less) the current standard grocery rate ($35.00 per day) for government employees will be provided five days per week for one person.  Two days off per week will be mutually agreed upon. BLM Volunteer uniform components i.e.: cap, vest, shirts, name badge, may be provided by the BLM. When such items are worn, they must be clean and reflect a positive image of the agency.
