DESCRIPTION:

Looking for enthusiastic individuals with a passion for the outdoors, history, and sharing knowledge to volunteer with us for the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. As team members, volunteers will staff our Lower Cliff Dwelling, assist with interpretive programs, and visitor center operations.

Tonto National Monument is looking for motivated, enthusiastic individuals with a passion for the outdoors, history, and sharing knowledge to volunteer with us for the Fall, Winter, and Spring seasons. Tonto National Monument protects two 14th century Salado cliff dwellings. While mostly known for its cliff dwellings and prehistoric culture, Tonto is also rich in wildlife, botany, geology, pioneer history, and sweeping views of the Sonoran Desert landscape.

Volunteers may work intermittently, or up to 40 hours per week consisting of 8 hour days. If desiring an on-site R.V. pad with hook-ups (water, sewer, electric), a minimum of 32 hours per week per person will be required for a minimum of 2 months. Priority will be given to those who can stay the entire November-April season.

 

Area Information:

Tonto National Monument overlooks the Tonto Basin in southeastern Arizona. Tonto National Forest and Roosevelt Lake Recreation area are adjacent to the Monument. Full shopping facilities are available in Globe (27 miles) and Payson (50 miles).

 

DUTIES
  • Hike a steep ½ mile paved trail gaining 350 feet in elevation to the Lower Cliff Dwelling
  • Staff Lower Cliff Dwelling, providing informal interpretation to visitors and resource protection
  • Staff Visitor Center with park rangers, providing information to visitors about the Monument and reminding visitors of proper hiking safety such as water and proper footwear
  • Operate Western National Park Association park store register, assisting visitors with product questions, purchases, and discounts
  • Assist park staff with formal interpretive programs with such as Upper Cliff Dwelling tours, Lower Cliff Dwelling tours, night hikes, evening programs, patio talks, or guided walks
  • Assist resource management staff with performing various duties including pulling weeds, checking game cameras, or monitoring sites and follow all relevant procedures established by resource staff
  • Attend field days with staff to explore surrounding area and increase knowledge
  • Assist park rangers with various projects including photography, publication development, community outreach, and digital media

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Tonto National Monument is located in the Sonoran Desert. Volunteers can expect to spend approximately half of their time outdoors in all weather conditions. Temperatures can reach down below freezing in the winter and in the 90s by April. Working outdoors, you may encounter a variety of animals including snakes, bees, javelina, and many bird species.
