DESCRIPTION:

Craig Brook NFH, located in East Orland, Maine offers volunteers an opportunity to assist with maintaining a conservation hatchery and recreational areas from May through September. The facility is near Acadia National Park and the Downeast coast of Maine which offer a wide variety of recreation activities.

Craig Brook National Fish Hatchery (NFH), located in East Orland, Maine is a conservation hatchery focused on the restoration of Atlantic salmon in the Gulf of Maine. Craig Brook NFH is seeking a volunteer to assist with general duties of facility maintenance, visitor services and fish rearing. In turn, we aim to provide a positive experience for the volunteer as they engage in conservation work for one of the country’s most iconic fish species, Atlantic salmon.

 

Typical volunteer activities include daily maintenance of public use areas including bath-houses, picnic areas and trails, light grounds maintenance [mowing, trimming, leaf-blowing], transporting adult broodstock from a trapping facility, and providing public outreach in our Visitor Center. Craig Brook NFH is open to the public year-round and volunteers will have the opportunity to interact with visitors by giving tours of the facility or providing other outreach services.

 

Craig Brook NFH is comprised of several buildings for water treatment, fish rearing, offices, and public use areas on over 138 acres. East Orland is a small town with small family-owned shops and restaurants. Ellsworth, Bangor and Belfast are larger towns within 30-40 minutes away. We are close to Acadia National Park, Baxter State Park and Maine Woods and Water National Monument.

 

 

DUTIES
• Assisting with maintenance of facilities, grounds, nature trail, and equipment

• Cleaning of fish rearing trays, tanks, raceways, and pools involving the use of brushes and power washers

• Conducting tours of the hatchery and providing a positive educational experience for visitors

• Assisting with data entry and other office/clerical tasks as needed

• Use of small power tools, riding lawnmowers, and string trimmers may be required (Onsite training required)

• Use of a government vehicle may be required (Motor vehicle use authorization required)

 

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should be physically fit, able to lift up to 50 pounds, able to climb in and out of recessed circular pools and raceways, able to perform repetitive-motion work, and have good balance. A positive attitude, strong communication skills, and strong work ethic are essential for supporting the small team environment at the Hatchery.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Most of the work activities will be conducted in an outdoor environment and can be strenuous. There are six permanent staff at the hatchery along with two summer interns. There will be a mix of working as a team and working independently. Each day there will be a variety of tasks to assist with.
