DESCRIPTION:

Campground Host for Mountain Home Ranger District. Several locations. Dog Creek CG, Elks Flat CG, Shaffer Butte CG, Trinity Area CG, Cottonwood Guard Station

 

The Mountain Home Ranger Districts is seeking Volunteer campground hosts for the Dog Creek CG, Elks Flat CG, Shaffer Butte CG, Trinity Area CG, Cottonwood Guard Station. A subsistence reimbursement allowance may be available.

Hosting Opportunities on the Mountain Home District may be available at the following campgrounds:

(1) Dog Creek Campground is located four miles from the town of Pine, in south-central Idaho. This quiet campground sits off the main road. It offers two small group campsites that can accommodate up to 15 people each. Eleven single-family campsites are available as well. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided.

(2) Elks Flat Campground is approximately five miles north of the town of Pine. This campground contains two large-group campsites that can accommodate up to 100 people. Each site is equipped with covered pavilions, picnic tables and cement site pads. Vault toilets and drinking water are provided.

(3) Shaffer Butte Campground is located atop the scenic Boise Ridge Mountains, near Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area, at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Shafer Butte contains single-family tent campsites and two day-use, group picnic areas, all of which are accessible. Sites are equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings, and many of the overnight campsites have tent pads. The overnight sites are walk-in and are clustered close together.

(4) Trinity Area Campgrounds located in the “Trinities,” a beautiful high elevation area on the Mountain Home Ranger District (4-wheel drive recommended). Numerous lakes dot the area (some with campgrounds (33 sites) and rustic cabins are perfect settings for a mid-summer visit.

 

DUTIES

A personal RV is required to be a host at all sites. Water is available at hand pumps, electricity is available at some campgrounds. A subsistence reimbursement allowance may be available.

General duties include:

• Providing visitor information

• General assistance to visitors

• Cleaning and stocking restrooms

• Shoveling and cleaning out fire rings

• Monitoring the water system to ensure it is operating properly

• Sweeping parking spurs and roadways, as needed

• Reporting vandalism or facilities that are in need of repair

• Litter pick up

• Fee Compliance

• Fee Collection (may be required)

Ensuring that campers pay their fees is one of the host’s primary duties. Campground hosts conduct both morning and evening checks to verify that campers have paid their fees and are abiding by vehicle limits. The host records visitor information that is submitted to the Forest Service to verify payment. Hosts will request that visitors pay the fee when they have failed to do so. The Forest Service relies on these fees to operate and maintain campgrounds.

The Forest Service provides all maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment to hosts volunteering at these sites.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicant should enjoy talking with people; should have a basic interest in natural and/or cultural history as well as outdoor recreation; and should be flexible.
