DESCRIPTION:

The North Fork John Day Campground is located 8 miles N of Granite, OR and is situated along the beautiful North Fork John Day River and is a gateway to the adjacent wilderness of the same name. The campground offers 5 tent sites, and 15 tent/trailer sites, as well as horse handling facilities and a trailhead. This campground is typically hosted from Memorial Day through mid-October, though a shorter duration is negotiable.

Host Duties: The volunteer will use their personal vehicle to conduct business; the Forest Service will provide all tools and supplies. Duties include the following and require light physical exertion:

  • Clean restrooms
  • Keep toilet paper stocked
  • Clean campsites (Remove excess ash and debris from fire rings, pick up trash at site, etc.)
  • Rake debris and remove vegetation from around fire rings to prevent fires from spreading
  • Remove any rope, nails, or other items that are tied to or embedded in trees
  • Periodically check information board and signs in the campground and report to Forest Service staff if they need maintenance or replacement
  • Keep paved trail clear of debris
  • Minor maintenance (pruning vegetation, painting tables, etc.)
  • Always be looking at the campground and facilities for safety hazards (i.e. broken tree limb, rotten table seat, etc.)
  • Visitor assistance (answer visitor questions about the area, available activities/sights, rules)
  • Occupancy and fee compliance checks
  • Record keeping (number of hours worked/miles driven, which sites are occupied daily, personal reimbursements, etc.)
