DESCRIPTION:

Campground Host Cumberland Gap NHP (Wilderness Road Campground)

Located along the beautiful Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stretches across three states, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, offering a unique and diverse experience. With over 80 miles of hiking trails, historical sites, overlooks, camping, and guided tours, Cumberland Gap provides opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities.

 

Wilderness Road Campground, Cumberland Gap NHP’s only front country campground offers 154 total sites, 41 of those with 20, 30 and 50 amp hookups. Other amenities include, water filling station, waste water dumping station, three heated bath houses, and bear proof containers on primitive camping sites.

 

 

DUTIES
· Works directly with park staff on a variety of outdoor projects

· Operating camp store during designated hours. Handling of Eastern National fees and merchandise.

· Maintaining Bathhouse:

Host is responsible for the daily cleaning and restocking of supplies (Cleaning includes, but not limited to; mopping, scrubbing toilets and urinals, cleaning walls and stall dividers, dusting, cleaning showers and outside hallway, sweeping walkways, etc.)
Empty bear proof trash cans and replace trash bags near bathhouse.
· Host may be responsible for other bathhouses during the absence of park staff.

· Provide correct information and assistance to park visitors

· Rove campground and report concerns to law enforcement or supervisor

· Appropriate use of park radio

· Possible use of government vehicles with valid driver’s license and NPS approved Defensive Driver Training.

· Responsible for the care of all NPS issued items (Radio, Utility Vehicle, Keys, etc.)

· Maintain a clean and organized campsite

· Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Located in the southeastern portion of the United States, Cumberland Gap experiences mostly mild temperatures. However, we have experienced snow in April on occasion. Summers are mild but can be humid.

 

The campground is positioned on a slight grade, with the entrance station located at the top of the hill. Most walking surfaces are paved or concrete. Volunteers will be provided with a work vehicle (Kubota RTV), use is restricted to the campground area.
