DESCRIPTION:

Seeking to fill 4 Visitor Center Host positions from April 15– Sep 15, 2023

Exciting volunteer opportunity located on the beautiful Snake River in Southeastern Washington State at Lower Granite Lock and Dam. Lower Granite could use extra help at our visitor center to help answer guests’ questions, give directions, and provide tours of the dam. Both individuals and couples are welcome to apply. We are looking for individuals who enjoy working with people of all ages and fostering positive experiences. Friendly encounters at visitor centers help people get acquainted with recreational opportunities, and connect them to ranger programs, new exhibits, and all the exciting work being done by the Army Corps of Engineers at Lower Granite. However, the position may also require assistance at various project recreational sites, local schools, public events, and other areas as assigned.

 

These positions are located at Lower Granite Lock and Dam, located about 40 minutes from Pomeroy, Washington. This opportunity affords the unique opportunity to live in a volunteer camp on the shores of the Snake River. Compensation includes a full hook-up RV site with water, sewer, electric (50amp max), and propane in exchange for 25+ hrs./wk/person. Housing for these positions requires the volunteer to provide their own RV or trailer. Wi-Fi is available at volunteer’s personal expense.

 

Further compensation includes all necessary uniform components and safety gear. Travel to the duty station is reimbursed upon approval if the volunteer agreement is fulfilled., 6 – month commitment required, capped at two years. Use of Lower Granite NRM’s ATV and GSA Vehicles is authorized once appropriate training has been completed

DUTIES

The volunteer(s) will assist in visitor center operations including guest orientation, providing information to visitors, and answering questions, informal interpretation, giving interpretive programs(tours), DYNW bookstore operations and working with project staff on various projects, including assistance with light groundskeeping at recreational sites.

 

· Assist at the information desk by answering questions, providing directions, and generally assisting visitors in a friendly and prompt manner.

· Assist with interpretive programs, including the lower Granite tour program.

· Familiarity with educational programs, provide assistance with field trips visiting the project, including orientations, general support, and potentially leading educational activities.

· Consistently provide visitors with well-researched, accurate, and relevant information about the project and other USACE areas.

· Assist bookstore customers, inventories, and stocks merchandise. Volunteer(s) may be asked to operate Discover Your Northwest (DYNW) register with proper training provided by site manager.

· Engage with the public through alternative means, including bulletin boards, wayside exhibits, and fulfilling interpretive material requests and brochure requests.

· Light grounds maintenance and maintaining/repairing of recreation amenities.

· Be familiar with emergency and safety procedures.

· Provide general assistance to USACE staff as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Represent the Army Corps of Engineers and Lower Granite Lock and Dam when in uniform. Pleasant and professional manner, communication skills, patience, problem-solving ability, dependability, team player, can work independently. Must be able to work effectively with people of all ages, cultures, backgrounds, and levels of knowledge.
