JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Description

The host serves as a positive public representative of the BLM to the visiting/recreating public. The host will provide visitor services at developed Recreation Sites. Duties include visitor assistance such as answering questions about recreation opportunities in the local area, natural resources of the area, navigating roads in the area, or campground rules and policies. The host performs light maintenance such as cleaning and restocking toilets, cleaning throughout the Recreation Site, collecting trash and garbage, light painting, maintaining signs and bulletin boards, maintaining fee stations, and recording visitor fee information. The host also responds to visitor problems or complaints and works to resolve the problem, or contacts the appropriate resource to resolve the situation, as needed.

 

The host does not perform prohibited functions such as firefighting, law enforcement, or similar hazardous work. The host does not enforce recreation fee payment compliance. The host is not authorized to perform any work that requires specific training or credentials (chain saw work, electrical, welding, etc.), unless they are trained, currently certified, and authorized by the BLM line supervisor.

 

This is a live in position at the Recreation Site. The host must have their own self-contained recreational vehicle to live in while on duty. Camp host sites include electrical, propane, water and septic hook ups. Closest amenities are in Bonanza, Oregon located approximately 20 miles west. We ask that host commit to being at the site from mid-May through mid-October. The number of hours worked daily will very but 4 hours per day should be expected. Host will be expected to be on duty Thursday-Monday. Duties will be shared with second host.

The host may be authorized to use a government utility vehicle for official use with proof of valid state issued driver’s license and completion of training, vehicle orientation, and ‘authorization to operate a government vehicle’ form.

 

Recreation Area Description

Gerber is set on a vast plateau in the high desert about one hour’s drive east of Klamath Falls, Oregon. Closest amenities are in Bonanza, Oregon located approximately 20 miles west. Mountain ridges and scattered Ponderosa Pine forests add variety and texture to the area. Gerber offers opportunities for camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, along with access to 100,000 acres of backcountry suitable for exploring, hunting, wildlife viewing, and scenic OHV driving. Crappie, Bass and Catfish are commonly found in the reservoir and attract large numbers of visitors during high water years. Developed campsites are available at Gerber North, South and horse Campgrounds. Day-use areas are available at North and South campgrounds as well as two boat ramps.

 

Reimbursement Details

Lodging or camp rate reimbursement, at the rate of $38 per day on duty, may be provided to the volunteer for the convenience of BLM. The host will be reimbursed for scheduled workdays, as well as extra workdays required for training or holiday work. BLM will reimburse the host for the use of their private vehicle, to commute round trip once per week between their assigned Recreation Site and their local residence or Klamath Falls if residence is out of the local area, and for other required work-related trips, at the rate of $0.14 per mile. Couples may be accepted and share in host responsibility but only one reimbursement will be provided.

 

Background Details

Host will work as a representative of the BLM interacting with the public on a daily basis without direct supervision. For this reason, host must successfully complete a background check prior to start date. Background check will require applicants to complete an online questionnaire and finger printing at an authorized government facility. County sheriff or other outside agency backgrounds and fingerprints will not be accepted. The BLM will reimburse selected applicants for mileage to and from fingerprinting locations once an acceptable background is completed.
