DATES: 5/15/2026 – 9/30/2026

DEPT: Forest Service

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Black Mesa Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest is looking for a volunteer to help staff the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center through the end of September 2026. Duties for the daily operations include: managing sales and inventory of a small gift area (we are cashless), talking to visitors and answering questions about the local area, providing information about recreation opportunities on the forest, and educating visitors on fire safety, current conditions, and Leave No Trace principles. Additional duties may include light maintenance such as picking up trash, interior cleaning and maintaining displays within the visitor center, and stocking/light cleaning of on-site public restrooms.

You will work an eight-hour shift Thursday through Sunday (32 hours), which includes travel time from the ranger station to the visitor center. Long hours of standing or sitting are part of the job as well as some walking around the visitor center grounds on the beautiful Mogollon Rim.

A federal background check will be conducted upon award of the position. If couples wish to both volunteer, an application must be completed for EACH person. Please include three references (with phone numbers) on the volunteer application. References should be unrelated to you and able to speak about your ability and/or aptitude for the position. Preference will be given to couples who both wish to volunteer their time.

Volunteers must always present a neat, professional appearance and wear appropriate uniform components and name plate while working in the public eye and on official duty. The uniform will be provided to you at no cost. Volunteers will be trained in and adhere to all Forest Service Safety and Customer Service procedures.

This volunteer opportunity comes with a free full hook-up RV site in the Forest Service community behind the ranger station in Overgaard, Arizona. Amazing views, towering Ponderosa pines, and an average 30 degrees cooler than the valley await you!
