JOB DESCRIPTION:
The U.S Army Corps of Engineers at Benbrook Lake is seeking maintenance/trash removal volunteers in Fort Worth, Texas. Benbrook Lake is a flood control, water supply, and recreation project that provides outdoor opportunities for the surrounding community. Maintenance volunteers serve as an important role helping around the parks. The primary duty of the maintenance volunteer is to assist the ranger and maintenance staff with everyday maintenance duties and various projects. This position will primarily report to the maintenance lead. All volunteers and anyone, physically living with the volunteer (18 years of age and older) must submit to a Background Check. Only individuals who can pass the Background Check will be accepted as Maintenance volunteers and/or allowed to live onsite within the campground. Maintenance volunteers will provide 20 service hours a week (80 service hours a month) per individual in exchange for their campsite, see Additional Requirements for more information. Volunteer service days are rendered seven days a week and on Holidays. Schedules vary to include weekdays, weekends, and holidays as scheduled by the Volunteer Coordinator. Key Responsibilities:
Visitor Services: Greet visitors and provide information about Benbrook Lake, recreational opportunities, park rules, and America the Beautiful Passes.
Public Relations: Promote a welcoming and professional atmosphere while addressing visitors’ questions or concerns.
Resource Protection: Encourage compliance with park rules and help promote stewardship of public lands.
Other: Assist USACE Maintenance and Park Ranger personnel in maintenance duties, such as walking/hiking trail maintenance, landscaping needs (mowing, picking up/cutting limbs/sticks and leaf litter), building and installing picnic tables, park benches and other recreation amenities. Maintenance Volunteers assist maintenance staff with plumbing, electrical and other maintenance issues in the parks and day use areas. Use various power tools and equipment. Clean and maintain storage and shop areas. Service and maintain equipment and log on maintenance logs. Start all equipment every two weeks to inspect it. Inspect shop areas to ensure safety. Clean Corps vehicles and vessels monthly. Conduct other various duties as needed. Assist rangers and other volunteers on various projects such as painting and cleaning.
Qualifications:
Must have reliable self-provided transportation from park to the lake office. Vehicle and camping unit must be fully legal, up to date on registration and insurance in compliance with all applicable state/local laws.
Friendly, professional demeanor with strong customer service and communication skills.
Ability to work independently and interact with a diverse group of visitors.
Basic computer skills preferred.
Experience in customer service, retail, or office settings is helpful but not required.
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and work in a public-facing environment.
Willingness to learn federal pass programs and Corps of Engineers policies.
