Job Description

Multiple Locations:

 

*Sourdough Creek Campground Host Site: (35 miles from Glennallen, AK)
Dump station/Electric
500 gallon potable water hookup available (Water delivered)
Host shack has cleaning supplies, toilet paper and fee envelopes.
Gas (for Kawasaki Mule) and propane will be supplied by BLM
Cell service is available. Sat Phone is also provided.

*Paxson Lake Campground Host Site: (62 miles from Glennallen, AK)
Dump station/no electric.
Non-potable water hookup available.
Potable water hand pump available in campground
Host shack has cleaning supplies, toilet paper and fee envelopes.
Will need a generator for power. Gas, propane, and a Kawasaki Mule will be supplied by BLM. Solar panel onsite also.
Cell service is available. Sat Phone is also provided.
Meier’s Lake Roadhouse (5 miles away) serves food and sells limited quantities of toiletries and dry goods. (Depends on hours of operation if available)

*Tangle Lakes Campground Host Site: (93 miles from Glennallen, AK)
Dump station/no electric.
50 gallon non-potable water tank available for use.
Two potable water hand pumps available in the campground.
Host shack for cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and fee envelopes.
Will need a generator for power. Gas, propane, and a Kawasaki Mule will be supplied by BLM. Solar panel onsite
Cell service not available. Nearest cell service is 13 miles down the Denali Highway towards Paxson. Sat Phone is provided. Tangle Lakes Lodge ½ mile from campground entrance has WIFI.
Tangle Lakes Lodge serves food and sells limited amounts of toiletries and dry goods.

*Brushkana Creek Campground Host Site: (30 miles from Cantwell, 176 miles from Glennallen, 196 miles from Wasilla)
Dump station/no electric.
200 gallon non-potable water tank available for use.
One potable water hand pump available in the campground.
Host shack for cleaning supplies, toilet paper, and fee envelopes.
Will need a generator for power. Gas, propane, and a Kawasaki Mule will be supplied by BLM. Solar panel onsite.
Cell service not available. Nearest cell service is Cantwell, (30 miles away towards the Parks Highway)
Showers and laundry available at the Vitus gas station and convenience store in Cantwell. Post Office available in Cantwell. Pizza restaurant and coffee shop at Mile 224 Parks Highway. Clearwater Mountain Lodge at Mile 82 Denali Highway. Denali National Park is 58 miles away from Brushkana Creek Campground.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Time Commitment will be June 1 – September 21 (Can be flexible on arrival/departure dates; Need June, July, August covered)
We ask that hosts do their volunteer work either 5 days on and 2 days off, or 10 days on and 4 days off, with work time on the weekends.

*Monitor fee program.
*Monitor campground visitor use and collect data.
*Assist visitors with registration, explain campground policy, and provide travel and recreation planning information.
*Help with day-to-day operations of the campground including light janitorial maintenance, site maintenance (cleaning tables and fire rings and removing litter), filling potholes, and minor repairs.
*Spot cleaning of outhouses.
*Report maintenance needs, campground disturbances, and emergencies to BLM staff.
*Conduct groundskeeping duties, including removal of fallen trees, weeding and pruning of low shrubs in the campground.
*Maintains recreation areas by picking up trash and cleaning fire pits.
*Maintains trails and recreation sites by pruning trees and shrubs with hand tools and pre-approved power equipment. Runs power tools such as lawn mower and weed trimmer.
*Maintains excellent customer service and the ability to resolve issues.

Volunteer must provide:
*Own trailer or RV for housing
*All expenses for personal needs

What BLM provides:
*Reimbursement for food and incidental expenses not to exceed $42.00 per day, per duty station, per couple.
*Reimbursement of transportation costs from home of record to duty station and back.
*Gas for generators/Mule and propane for cooking and heating.
*Orientation, training, and uniforms.

Working Conditions:
*Campgrounds are rustic and remote. Nearest full service communities range from 50-200 miles away, medical facilities are sparse and far.
*Summer temperatures range from lows in the teens to highs in the 80s. Rain, sleet, snow, wind, thunderstorms, wildfires, flooding, and road closures are to be expected.
*Bugs are plentiful and bothersome.
*Volunteers may come in contact with brown/black bears, moose, and other wildlife.
