JOB DESCRIPTION:

Thanks for volunteering to be a campground host and interpretive volunteer at Hovenweep National Monument.

Housing available: RV pad with full hook-ups or a room in shared housing with a private bathroom.

Major Duties

Work may include:

Assisting with the implementation of an online reservation system in the campground; checking reservations, posting and removing reservation signs on campsites; answering questions about campground procedures, the park and surrounding areas when roving the campground; monitor visitor compliance with all campground rules and regulations and report to the appropriate parties.
Staffing the visitor center, following routine opening, closing, and operating procedures.
Answering visitor questions about the park; providing orientation to the area, and recording visitor statistics.
Providing accurate, updated information including appropriate safety and resource protection concerns in the visitor center, at park overlooks, and on park trails.
Roving park overlooks/trails and engaging visitors in informal interpretive dialogues. Conversations should foster visitors’ emotional & intellectual connection to park resources, be well-researched and accurate, include relevant safety messages, and adhere to NPS interpretive standards.
Completing assigned special projects and collateral duties to enhance the interpretive operation.
Perform light trail maintenance using a provided standard.
Attending training sessions, potentially including overnight stays. Working on weekends and holidays if needed.
Providing supervisor with recommendations for improving the visitor center operation as necessary.
Actively participating in a safe workplace culture.
Keeping camping areas clean, organized, and presentable.
Performing routine litter removal from campground and other areas of the monument.
Assisting with light maintenance projects and resource management projects as needed.
ONLY IF REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK COMPLETED: Collecting fees for permits or park entrance passes.
Carrying out the above duties in a collaborative, professional, and respectful manner.

Knowledge and Skills Required

The volunteer must have a strong awareness of the importance of sensitivity to park policies, procedures, and chain of command, personal and visitor safety, and be willing to follow specific directions of the site volunteer supervisor. Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities needed are:

Ability to work independently with little or no supervision for extended periods of time.
Ability to maintain a positive attitude, consistently be courteous and polite to visitors, fellow workers, and supervisors & represent the National Park Service well by presenting oneself in a professional manner at all times.
Skill at oral communications and tactful discussion of controversial subject matter.
Ability to follow written and oral directions, asking clarifying questions to ensure understanding of expectations.
Knowledge of Arches and Canyonlands national parks, the surrounding area, and the Four Corners area of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona at a basic level.
Knowledge of the SE Utah communities of Moab, Monticello, Blanding, and Bluff at a basic level.
Ability to operate portable radios.
