TITLE: Head Campground Host
REPORTS TO: Director of Public Access & Recreation
LOCATION: Mars Vista Campground, near Zortman, MT

GROUP: Flex Temporary, Part-time, Non-exempt
HOURS PER WEEK: approximately 39
ON DUTY HOURS: set duty hours 8-11am and 4-7pm daily, 6.5 days per week; additional duty hours as required

PAY: $585 per week with overtime if incurred; overtime is not anticipated and must be pre-approved by supervisor
REIMBURSEMENT: for mileage incurred while working upon submittal of APR reimbursement form
INCLUDED: RV site with free 30A and 50A service provided, available on-site dump station and potable water tanks
EXTENUATING CONDITIONS: This time of year, expect variable weather conditions including cold temperatures and accumulation of snow. It is advised to have a vehicle and camper set up that can access and maneuver in varied snow level or mud conditions.

 

 

START DATE: September 27, 2021 with exact start date to be mutually agreed upon
END DATE: October 18, 2021 with exact end date to be mutually agreed upon

JOB PURPOSE: The Head Campground Host is a key role in APR’s work to encourage public access to the North American grasslands. APR’s visitor facilities serve as basecamps for people from around the world to explore the prairie landscape. This role is an opportunity to serve as host to visitors from near and far in one of Montana’s most beautiful locations.

The Head Host is responsible for day-to-day operation and oversight of APR’s newest visitor facility, the Mars Vista Campground. Located along US 191 just north of the Missouri River, the campground is modeled on a KOA facility with a bath house, 4 cabins, 12 RV sites and 8 tent sites.

 

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
1. General oversight of campground

  • Create and manage weekly work schedule with the Assistant Host to ensure morning and evening coverage of campground, 7 days/week.
  • Manage reservations for cabins and campsites using APR’s online booking system
  • Model good camping practices at the host site by observing all campground rules and keeping the host site clean and orderly
  • Ensure facility systems and processes are followed and suggest improvements to APR staff
  • Serve as main point of contact at Mars Vista for APR staff and the Construction and Visitor Operations Manager

2. Visitor monitoring and orientation

  • Welcome and assist campers with sites or cabins
  • Collect payment via APR’s online booking system
  • Provide information on what to see and do in the local area; provide information on local services and communities
  • Provide campers with campground rules and policies
  • Distribute maps and other APR materials
  • Help at dump station for RV owners

3. Property and facility maintenance

  • Clean cabins, campsites and bathhouse daily and as needed
  • Keep bathhouse stocked with supplies
  • Change security codes on bathhouse and cabins weekly
  • Assist with special events at the campground
  • Monitor the 2-mile nature trail and 25 interpretive signs for any maintenance needs
  • Clean campsites by performing minor maintenance including raking tent sites, washing tables, shoveling fire rings, picking up litter, and reporting any damage or larger maintenance needs to the CVO Manager.
  • Perform light repairs and maintenance to structures and grounds
  • Supplies inventory and restocking

Specific skills, educational requirements, credentials, experience, knowledge and attributes needed for high performance:

  • Enthusiasm for and positive representation of APR’s mission, goals and culture
  • Genuine interest and ability to talk with people of all backgrounds and cultures
  • Ability to use a computer and/or iPad, text on a smartphone, and email
  • Ability to problem-solve
  • Self-motivated work ethic
  • Previous experience as a campground host, preferably in a remote setting
  • Basic familiarity with plumbing and electrical systems
  • Pickup of supplies or transport trash and recycling to Lewistown or Zortman in rare instances
  • An ability to use basic hand tools and perform minor repairs is preferred
