JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Las Cienegas Site Host serves as the liaison between public visitors of the Las Cienegas National Conservation Area (LCNCA) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Tucson Field Office. The Site Host also serves as the day-to-day grounds caretaker at the Empire Ranch Headquarters.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – include, but not limited to the following:

• Meet, greet, and inform visitors

• Site Host answers questions visitors may ask about the LCNCA.

• Explain the regulations that apply to the LCNCA (Site Host information binder will be

provided by BLM).

• Hand out maps or other informational materials (LCNCA map, LCNCA rules and regulations,

recreation flyers, etc.).

 

GROUNDS AND FACILITY MAINTENANCE/OPERATIONS – include, but not limited

to the following:

• Perform light maintenance work around the grounds, trails, and paths of the Empire

Ranch Headquarters (tools and equipment will be provided by the BLM).

• Litter pickup with trash pickers (provided by the BLM) and disposal in trash containers.

• Site Host will be required to complete Blood-borne pathogen training, if picking up needles with

trash pickers (subject to Field Manager approval).

• Check vault toilets at the headquarters daily, restock toilet paper and sweep floors

between contractor visits, if needed.

• Maintain the grounds of the headquarters, as directed by the BLM Park Ranger.

• Cut or remove weeds using hand tools (provided by the BLM).

• Sweep concrete walks/slabs (Empire Ranch Vail House, vault toilets, Huachuca House Visitor

Contact Station).

• Trim overhanging branches (only within clearing limits) along paths or trails with hand tools (no

chainsaw work).

• Restock flyer and hand out dispenser outside the Huachuca House Visitor Contact Station.

• No work is to be done on any historic buildings or structures, inside or out.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS – include, but not limited to the following:

• Work is mostly outside on the grounds of the Empire Ranch Headquarters and

Heritage Discovery Trail.

• Winters are cold, dry, and mostly clear, with winter rains and occasional snow from October

to April.

• Walking is required to check the grounds of the headquarters and trails.

• RV or travel trailer must stay on-site at the designated Site Host camp unit.

• Site Host must adhere to all LCNCA rules and regulations.

 

SITE HOST FURNISHED ITEMS – items recommended by the BLM for the Site

Host volunteer to bring during their assignment to the LCNCA:

• RV or travel trailer for staying on-site.

• All transportation, camping and personal equipment.

• All food and personal supplies.

• Personal telephone.

 

BLM FURNSIHED ITEMS – items that BLM will furnish for the Site Host volunteer

during their assignment on the LCNCA.

• Use of space to set up RV or travel trailer.

• Water hook up from the on-site water system.

• Electric hookup from existing panel. In case of power outage, site host will be responsible

for providing their own secondary source of power.

• Propane tank refills during the Site Host stay.

• Septic tank hook-up.

• Key to site for the access of facilities and restrooms (Site Host and BLM will sign a DI-105

form).

• Key to Empire Ranch vault toilet paper holder or combination for the lock (requires DI-

105 form).

• Extra toilet paper (for use by the Site Host and for re-stocking the public toilet if the paper is used

up before the Contractor services the unit).

• Grounds maintenance tools: rake, shovel, pruning saw, pruning loppers, leather gloves,

safety goggles, broom.

• BLM volunteer attire. May be either a shirt or vest or hat.
