Location: Parkway Visitor Center in Tupelo, Mississippi – Milepost 266 on the Natchez Trace Parkway
Why Volunteer? The Natchez Trace Parkway is seeking active, dedicated, and enthusiastic volunteers to assist with visitor services! This is more than just volunteering—it’s an opportunity to be part of a living legacy—as the United States prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, you can help connect visitors to the stories, landscapes, and cultural heritage that shaped our nation.
The Trace spans 444 miles through Mississippi, Alabama, and Tennessee, preserving a route traveled for centuries by Indigenous peoples, European settlers, and traders from all over. Today, visitors come to experience the Trace for scenic beauty, historic landmarks, and rich cultural heritage, and volunteers play a vital role in making their journey unforgettable.
This is your chance to share the wonders of the Natchez Trace Parkway, help visitors create memories that last a lifetime, and contribute to the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary—all while exploring some of the most iconic destinations in the South!
Surrounding Area Highlights: Northern Mississippi offers incredible opportunities to explore beyond the Parkway. Tupelo is a vibrant city known for its Southern hospitality and music heritage as the birthplace of Elvis Presley. Nearby, charming small towns known for festivals and quaint downtowns provide authentic Southern experiences. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the many state parks located along the Parkway, where dramatic rock formations, watercraft activities, and scenic hiking trails abound.
You’ll also be close to major destinations that offer incredible cultural and recreational experiences. Less than two hours away is Memphis, Tennessee, famous for Beale Street’s vibrant music scene, world-class barbecue, and the National Civil Rights Museum. At the northern terminus of the Trace lies Nashville, the heart of country music and a hub for live entertainment, history, and dining. To the east, northern Alabama invites exploration of the Tennessee River Valley, scenic waterfalls, and hiking trails, along with the rich musical traditions of Muscle Shoals. Volunteering here means you’re at the crossroads of history, culture, and adventure!
Goal/Outcome of Position:
· Provide orientation, information, and interpretation on park resources, safety, and trip planning to visitors in a positive, professional manner while representing the National Park Service.
· Help visitors make personal connections to park resources and values to inspire stewardship and enjoyment.
· Staff the visitor center desk, operate a cash register, rove the Parkway pullouts and trails, and more.
Uniform: Required to wear volunteer uniform: shirts, hat, and jacket provided by the park; pants, closed-toe shoes, and belt provided by volunteer.
Housing: On-site RV pad with hook-ups (water, sewer, electric) is available. A minimum of 32 hours per week (24 hours per person for a couple) is required for 3 months to utilize the RV pad. Opportunities may be available for up to 6 months. Couples wishing to apply should complete an application for each person.
