BOR Primitive Campground and Day Use Host

At Prineville Reservoir, we regard our park hosts as integral members of our team. Your contributions, efforts, and ideas are always valued.

As OPRD’s first designated IDA park (International Dark-sky Association), Prineville Reservoir offers exceptional star- gazing opportunities.

The host site for this position is located at the Big Bend Campground located on the Crooked River near Bowman Dam. The host campsite is a full-hookup site (electric, water, and sewer). Reception for cell phones is limited without signal boosters. This position requires driving between properties. The BOR host will have a state vehicle to use while performing their duties.

OPRD manages the Prineville Reservoir Management Unit, but the land itself is actually owned by the BOR (Bureau of Reclamation). Outside of the two main designated campgrounds, we are charged with managing primitive camping areas and two additional day use areas. The BOR host helps park staff maintain Powderhouse Cove (day use), Bear Creek (day use) and Roberts Bay (primitive camping). The main responsibilities for this host are: picking up ltter, light cleaning of two pit toilets, cleaning out rock fire rings, collecting car counter numbers, light landscaping (including weed whacking and trimming), and acting as the “eyes and ears” of the area. As the designated BOR ranger, I am the main point of contact for this host position. I spend three days a week managing and maintaining these outerlying properties, and two days a week I’m back at our main park property (about 45 minutes from this host site). I frequently check in with the BOR host to address any concerns, restock supplies, and ensure that they feel fully supported.

For hosts with interest in special projects, we like to “play to your strengths.” If you have special skillsets, we would love to utilize your strengths for projects in related scopes.

For single hosts, we ask for 20-25 service hours/week. For a pair of hosts, we ask for a combined 30-35 service hours/week
