ADDRESS: St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge; 21 Pintail Ln; Natchez, Mississippi 39120

DEPT: Fish & Wildlife Service

DATES: 2/21/2022 – 12/3/2022

DESCRIPTION:

Volunteer will mow roadsides, levees, and assist in miscellaneous maintenance tasks which vary by season. Outdoor enthusiasts are encouraged to apply! This is a great position for someone that enjoys working independently and enjoys living away from the city. Volunteer couples will be considered if we can find an appropriate position for your partner.

St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located along the Mississippi River just south of Natchez, MS. It is well known for the thousands of wading birds, waterfowl, and forest birds, which utilize the dense flooded areas, swamps, bottomland forests, and uplands. Bayou Cocodrie is just across the river in Ferriday, LA, and is comprised mainly of forested bottomlands and managed wetlands. This volunteer position is expected to be split between the two refuges.

We are primarily looking for SPRING/SUMMER/EARLY FALL volunteers at this time. To clarify the days of the week expected, the volunteer is expected to work a minimum of 4 days per week.

Clear levees, roadsides, and recreational trails of vegetation and treefall, using mowers and attachments (e.g., bush hog), hand tools, and various power tools within certification. Certifications can be arranged if needed, but the ideal candidate will have experience operating riding mowers, bushhogs, and small tractors. This position will primarily be working independently; the station manager will provide work locations, tasks, and priorities, and the volunteer will organize their time and equipment to complete assigned tasks. Miscellaneous tasks.

Additional duties/specialty: One of the refuge residences needs handyman/person for flooring installation, painting, a shower/tub enclosure replacement, and misc. small repairs such as kitchen sink plumbing and correction. The specific tasks and materials will be provided by the station manager. Please inquire if you are interested in this part.

HOUSING:

RV pads with electric, water, and sewer hookups are available at both refuges with a minimum of 180 hours of work for a six-week minimum term (30 hours per week) per resident. Due to the remote locations of the refuges, cellular phone service is not guaranteed, but is available by the office and is somewhat available at the RV site. See above for alternate arrangement in a refuge house that needs repairs. Inquire with the refuge manager about other on-site housing options, or if housing is not needed at all. Washer/dryer is available in a nearby refuge building. Sorry, no pets are allowed due to wildlife considerations.
