DESCRIPTION:

Work and live in a spectacular temperate rainforest! Support the mission of the NPS, interpretation staff and visitor center operations by providing quality information and orientation to visitors. The Hoh is one of the finest remaining examples of temperate rainforest in the United States and is one of the park’s most popular destinations.

 

Major Duties:

· Staff visitor center desk in shifts of 2-5 hours per day.

· Provide accurate visitor orientation and information.

· Rove area trails on foot and/or staffing informal popup interpretation stations.

· Respond to visitors in person, by phone, email, fax or mail.

· Visitor Center operation may include the following opening and closing procedures, updating information sources including bulletin boards, and may operate a cash register and conduct bookstore sales.

· Volunteer is trained in park radio system and should feel comfortable wearing and using portable radio for updating weather and emergencies.

· May use non-powered hand tools. May assist with maintenance of exhibits (dusting) and facility (window washing) not involving use of a ladder.

· May research/present informal programs and/or roving at various locations.

Volunteer works directly for area supervisor and maintains communication through phone, email and radio on daily duties. Volunteer is typically scheduled for specific days and times and will let the supervisor know if they are unable to make their shift through phone or email.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work will be performed mostly in front country settings including Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center. Work includes standing or sitting at a desk for up to 4 hours and roving on front country and occasionally backcountry trails in a variety of weather including sun, wind, snow and rain.
