DESCRIPTION:

Visitor Services Volunteers serve as front line representatives for the National Park Service welcoming and orienting park visitors, describing trails, discussing safety, roving park trails, and contributing to the preservation of park resources. Applicants should be friendly, welcoming, and able to work cohesively with a diverse group of park rangers, volunteers, partners, and the visiting public.

Visitor Service Volunteers greet visitors and help foster meaningful connections to Walnut Canyon National Monument. Volunteers provide park orientations, trail information, discuss the park’s cultural and natural history, share safety tips, rove park trails, and answer visitor questions. In addition to these duties, volunteers process sales for the Western National Park’s Association store.

 

Applicants must enjoy working with the public. Visitor Services Volunteers represent the park service and foster a friendly and welcoming environment for park visitors.

 

ACCOMIDATIONS

An RV pad with full hookups will be available for the selected volunteer(s). Laundry rooms are available for residential volunteers staying at the park’s RV sites. There is no park housing available for these positions.

 

COMMITMENT

Applicants must be available for 32 hours a week of volunteering.

DUTIES

·        Provide friendly, welcoming and inclusive introductions to Walnut Canyon for park visitors.

·        Contribute to a positive, professional, and supportive culture.

·        Communicate important park information, safety messages, trail details, information about the park’s natural and cultural history, and messages about resource protection.

·        Distribute park brochures, maps, bulletins, and other informational materials to visitors.

·        Conduct sales for the Western National Park’s Association (WNPA) park store.

·        Professionally represent the National Park Service with high quality visitor services. Volunteers will wear a National Park Service issued volunteer uniform.

·        Rove park trails and answer visitors questions/provide informal interpretive opportunities.

·        Complete and submit monthly volunteer hours timesheets.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·        Volunteer 32 hours per week during the duration of your volunteer commitment.

·        Available to volunteer between September 1 – December 17, 2022.

·        Familiarity with and commitment to the philosophy, mission and goals of the National Park Service.

·        Skills and desire to work in a diverse team with a diverse customer base.

·        Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

·        Ability to communicate and work with a variety of personalities individually or in a group.

·        Ability to work well under pressure. Visitor centers can become busy, creating a demanding work environment.

·        Previous experience with visitor center operations or customer service is desirable.

·        Volunteer must familiarize themselves with and abide by San Bernardino County, Riverside County, California, and park COVID-19 guidelines.
