DESCRIPTION:

The Trail Ambassador programs goal is to help prevent search and rescue efforts through educating users of the risks involved with and preparations necessary for a safe and fun hike. This work is primarily done on the Humphreys peak trail. Humphrey’s peak is the tallest in Arizona and attracts thousands of hikers daily during summer months. Other duties include maintenance of trailheads and wilderness areas.

The Trail Ambassador programs goal is to help prevent search and rescue efforts through educating users of the risks involved with and preparations necessary for a safe and fun hike. This work is primarily done on the Humphreys peak trail over weekends and holidays. Humphrey’s peak is the tallest in Arizona and attracts thousands of hikers daily during summer months. Taking advantage of this opportunity to make positive contacts with the public is important and rewarding work.

On a weekday volunteers may also be asked to assist the Recreation staff maintaining National Forest trailheads and wilderness areas. Duties include but are not limited to: driving to several trailheads in a day on paved and rugged dirt/gravel roads; making visitor contacts to answer questions; educate visitors about the area; install and maintain appropriate signs and kiosks; encourage visitors to practice Leave No Trace techniques; clean-up trash around the trailheads, dispersed campsites and other forest areas; report conditions, visitor numbers, problems and daily activities to the supervisor; assist in the care and maintenance of any vehicles used to perform duties.

The volunteer will always have a professional, courteous and helpful attitude when dealing with all members of the public, fellow volunteers and Forest Service employees. The volunteer will be trained in and adhere to all Forest Service Safety and Customer Service Procedures. This position requires a uniform, which will be provided.

 

DUTIES

On weekend days the volunteer will staff the Humphreys peak trailhead performing trail ambassador duties. Including but not limited to informal interactions with users regarding necessary equipment, trail hazards and what to expect on the hike. Additionally may be asked to hike sections of the trail and make public contacts.

This position may also hike other district trails to do light maintenance, visit trailheads to clean and repair items, post signage and record visitor use daily.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The position requires a valid state driver’s license to obtain a government driver’s license.

Knowledge of backcountry ethics and Leave No Trace principles.

Ability to be professional, courteous and helpful to members of the public as well as Forest Service employees.

An interest in promoting safe and responsible use of public lands.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Lodging is located at the Flagstaff Ranger Station where there are trailer pads with 30 amp power, water and sewer hook ups. Laundry is located on the grounds. Camp Elden, as it is locally known is in the middle of Flagstaff with all of the amenities one would expect in a town of 70,000 people. Typically there are 8-10 other volunteers living at Camp Elden throughout the summer as well. We ask that single volunteers work 24 hours a week and couples to work 36 hours a week during their stay at Camp Elden.
