DESCRIPTION:
The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge is seeking an individual or a couple that can assist with visitor services and light maintenance work. The refuge manages the Wise Point Boat Ramp, a Visitor Center, and many walking trails. Come join us on the beautiful Eastern Shore of Virginia!
This position is located at the Eastern Shore of Virginia NWR, which is approximately 10 miles south of Cape Charles, VA. If you enjoy the natural beauty of the shore, this is the area for you! The refuge is seeking an individual or couple that can assist with maintenance and visitor services duties. The refuge manages the Wise Point Boat Ramp and requires a steward to orient and answer visitor questions, check parking passes, and direct traffic should the boat ramp need to close due to reaching parking capacity. Maintenance needs include general landscaping such as mowing, weed whacking, and pollinator garden maintenance. Additional opportunities are available to help staff the Visitor Center and greet visitors.
RV/trailer utility hook-ups for electric (30 and 50 amp), water, and sewage are available. No propane. Laundry is available in a building adjacent to the trailer pads. WiFi is not available, but cell coverage is decent (Verizon is the best on the Eastern Shore). Hosting requires a minimum of 24 hours/week volunteering.

Duties are variable and may adjust due to need and skill level –
· Boat ramp steward including orienting visitors to the refuge, checking permit and parking compliance, directing traffic, picking up trash, and assisting with fee collection
· If qualified, perform preventative maintenance checks and maintenance on riding mowers and small engine equipment
· Mowing, weed whacking, pollinator garden maintenance
· Staffing Visitor Center, greeting and orienting visitors to the refuge
· General property maintenance and upkeep
· Willing to work 24 hours per week, including weekends and holidays
· Valid driver’s license
· Tolerance of heat, humidity, and biting insects
