RV INFORMATION: Trailer/RV PadsDescription: In exchange for providing 24 weekly hours per person, you will receive a full hookup site that resides in the volunteer village along the Bastrop Bayou portion of the refuge. The site includes picnic table, water, 30 and 50-amp electricity, sewage, propane, and a community building/ laundry facility that also has wifi access. The volunteer village is 20 minutes from local beaches as well as to the city of Lake Jackson which has all pleasantries such as theaters, restaurants, a shopping mall, and grocery stores. Houston Texas is 1 hour away with all services. If you enjoy fishing, the bayou provides excellent opportunities for trout and flounder with its easy access to the public fishing pier and boat ramp.

This wildlife refuge lies along the Gulf Coast of Brazoria County Texas, making it a vital estuary habitat that fosters hundreds of both aquatic and terrestrial animal species. It is a birding hotspot, known for hosting an immense population of migratory birds as well as the migrating insect, the monarch butterfly. These flying creatures call this refuge their home, but unfortunately their habitat is being lost due to many circumstances around the country and the USFWS has taken on the responsibility of restoring habitat in order to enhance monarchs’ habitat on the refuge property. Duties will include maintain a greenhouse so that we may raise resources for migrating monarchs. The greenhouse will be used for the raising of different species of milkweed, host and necture plants as well as raising butterflies for educating local students and visitors on conservation. During the summer months, the refuge focuses heavily on growing, weeding and transplanting milkweed, host and necture plants in the greenhouse and flowerbeds.  As the school year begins, there will be more focus on refuge field trips and educating students from the local Brazosport school district. The greenhouse will be incorporated into the field trips and the volunteer running the greenhouse will be expected to share knowledge and experience with other refuge staff as well as the intrigued students. Responsibilities Responsibilities for our volunteers include, but are not limited to: maintaining the greenhouse, raising butterflies and milkweeds, educating local students at our semi weekly field trips, assisting with special events and outreach, interacting with visitors and also the upkeep of the interior and exterior of public use areas. All volunteers are asked to run the information desk along with clerical office work. Additional duties will vary on individual interests, skills, and needs of the refuge, but the requested volunteer hours will be 24 hours per individual per week. We are requesting three months of volunteer service. Preference goes to volunteers whom are able to provide a longer commitment. Please send a resume with 2-3 references along with your availability.
