DESCRIPTION:
Gulf Islands National Seashore is seeking to fill two (2) maintenance site hosts at Opal Beach Complex and Okaloosa Day Use Area. Opal Beach Complex is on a barrier island along Highway 399 between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach. The Okaloosa Day Use Area is between Destin and Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Maintenance site hots work 32 hours a week per person from September 1 – November 30, 2023. Site host duties include assisting park visitors, performing grounds maintenance, and general custodial duties. Site hosts will not be required to handle any law enforcement issues. All violations will be reported to the local dispatch, and law enforcement rangers will be contacted.
Park staff will provide training and support for assigned duties. Site hosts perform tasks independently without direct supervision. Staff will make regular contact to provide support, heavy maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
An RV pad with hookups will be provided. Volunteers should be comfortable living in an isolated location. No pets are permitted.
Duties include:
- Pick up trash along the roadway, parking lot shoulders, and around picnic shelters.
- Clean restrooms, which include, but are not limited to, restocking paper towels and toilet paper dispensers, sweeping and mopping floors, disinfecting toilets and urinals, and cleaning sinks and countertops.
- Act as a public liaison by answering guest inquiries.
- Light mowing and trimming
- Walkway and pavilion cleaning, including sand removal
Qualifications:
- Friendly and outgoing personality with good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to perform maintenance duties in outdoor conditions
- Interact with diverse visitors while maintaining a positive, helpful, and non-confrontational attitude.
- Ability to serve independently without direct supervision
- Must be physically able to perform all duties with the necessary equipment. The work is done standing, walking, bent over, and lifting items on an occasional item.
- Must be able to use a shovel to move sand.
