Volunteer Activities• Office/Clerical • Other • Trail/Campground Maintenance • Visitor Information • Fish/Wildlife • Back Country/Wilderness • General Assistance • Weed/Invasive Species Control DescriptionMattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge in eastern North Carolina is currently recruiting Resident volunteers for 2021. Spring and summer are beautiful here but these months can be on the quiet side. Winter is our peak attraction season with thousands of migrating tundra swans, snow geese and a wide variety of ducks arriving to spend the winter with us. Resident volunteers work in the visitor center/gift shop.and assist with light maintenance such as trash pick up, landscaping, etc. This is an ideal situation for couples, but we also welcome single volunteers. Couples work 24 hours each per week; a single volunteer works 32 hours per week. Our camper pad is located on the canal leading to the lake and has water, sewer, and electric hookups, with a convenient free laundry facility. The weather is usually quite mild. If you like rustic, rural, picturesque surroundings, away from bright city lights, we’re just the place for you. Located in Hyde County, the refuge is an easy drive to the ocean and some of our larger near-by towns. Visit our website at www.fws.gov/refuge/mattamuskeet. If you are available and interested, please contact tracey_rock@fws.gov We have non-paid RV volunteer opportunities year round. We usually schedule volunteers for three – six month assignments. We provide camper pads with full hook ups, but do not offer any other housing for volunteers on the refuge. Responsibilities include staffing the visitor center and gift shop , trash pick up and ilight grounds maintenance such as mowing early spring thru late fall. We also maintain a pollinator garden, so some light gardening is included in the duties. Our 40,000 acre lake is the largest natural lake in North Carolina, with about 10,000 acres of surrounding woodlands and water impoundments. We are home to thousands of migrating tundra swans, snow geese, Canada geese, and a wide variety of ducks. during the winter. The birds leave in the early spring. This area is popular all spring, summer and fall for fishing and crabbing and photography, not for swimming (we do have alligators). The refuge is open daylight hours only; no overnight camping is allowed. Check out our website (www.fws.gov/refuge/mattamuskeet).
