Campground Hosts (Multiple Positions)

Camp Host Positions at Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Campgrounds are located at the higher elevation, in Newberry Caldera, and at the lower elevation, “Gateway” shortly after you enter the Monument.

Campgrounds Season: Varies, mid-May – end of Sept and early October

Newberry National Volcanic Monument Caldera and Gateway Campgrounds. Campground photos for each site can be found on recreation.gov:

Cinder Hill Campground Host 1: Full amenity hookups, 30 amp site. End Date: Sept 27. (End of September)

Cinder Hill Campground Host 2: Nearby water. No septic port. Use of the local dump site is available. End Date: Sept 7.

East Lake Campground: Full amenity hook ups, 50 amp site. No cellular connectivity. End Date: Sept 27.

Little Crater Campground 1: Full amenity hook ups, 50 amp site. Weak cellular connectivity. End Date: Sept 27.

Little Crater Campground Host 2: a dry site, has access to water. Nearby CXT to dump black water. End Date: Sept 7.

Paulina Lake Campground: Full amenity hook ups, 30 amp site. End Date: Sept 27

Paulina Lake Campground Host 2: Dry site with water, nearby dump station. Date: Sept 7.

AM and PM Support/Newberry Group Positions: FS Camp Hosts AM and PM Support will help manage the operations of Monument area campgrounds by providing outstanding customer service to campers. Each volunteer will be outfitted with a proper FS uniform with volunteer insignia to wear while on duty. AM/PM Support Campground Host will provide additional patrolling to the other campgrounds, outside of “home campground”, to check in with other campground hosts. Reimbursement is set per hosted site, not per person. AM Support work approximately 7-4 pm, PM Support works 4 – approximately 10 pm. Amount to be determined living expense reimbursement provided and is paid thru our partner organization Discover Your Forest (DYF). AM and PM Support End Date: Oct 27. Government driver’s license will be required for both AM & PM positions.

Prairie Campground: Full amenity hook ups. 30 amp site. Good cellular connectivity. End Date Sept 27.This position also services the Ogden Group camp and McKay Crossing campground in the vicinity. These sites are the “Gateway” campground sites not up in the Caldera, but still a part of the Forest and Newberry National Volcanic Monument. A government drivers license is required for this position.  These sites are at a lower elevation shortly when you turn off of Highway 97.

Description: Join the Forest Service team in the Newberry Caldera area to help manage the operations of beautiful campgrounds at a national treasure.  The Deschutes National Forest is seeking individuals motivated to provide outstanding customer service to campers at Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

Tentative Work Schedule and reimbursement: Rotating 4 days on, 3 days off, 5 days on, 2 days off. Works split shift tentatively from 8:30 am. To 1:30 pm. and again from 5:30- 9:00 p.m. Small Expense Reimbursement available. Reimbursement is for position, regardless if the position is a couple or individual. Upon arrival, within the first two weeks, due to snow levels at higher elevations, you may be placed at the lower elevation gateway campground(s) until the snow is cleared. Extensive training will be provided.

Job Duties:

Visitor Services

·      Uniformed host position primary duties include welcoming/orienting Monument visitors, and providing in-depth information on Monument sites.

·      Cash handling and record keeping experience required.

·      Willingness to assist with light routine maintenance and fee compliance.

Campground Administration

·      Welcome visitors and answer questions, manage on-site reservations system, confirm walk up visitor’s payments.

·      Sells firewood under DYF accounting systems.

·      Assist with envelope collections as needed.

·      Refreshes restrooms after the FS staff does morning cleaning, also cleans up grounds.

·      Assists with trash pick up, raking, recycling, and potentially becoming primary maintenance during low season.

Interpretation

·      Delivers minimum of one interpretive program, per week, in your specific campground.

·      As time allows, supplemental duties may include opportunities for interpretation including guiding hikes, day and evening ranger talks, Jr. Forest Ranger activities, and roving interpretation.

·      Individuals may be assigned special interpretive projects according to their skills and interests.

Desired Skills: Must be able to perform required duties with minimal supervision after orientation, communicate effectively with diverse audiences, and present a consistently friendly and helpful attitude; Forest Service uniform will be provided and worn during working hours; knowledge of Forest Service history and Deschutes National Forest recreation geography and policies is helpful, but not required. Training and support will be provided for development of visitor services knowledge and interpretive programs.

Housing: Couple or individual must be able to provide their own RV or travel trailer with its age being 2002 or newer. A photo of the RV may be requested prior to job offer. A paved or an aggregate surfaced RV pad is provided which includes water, septic, garbage, and electric service (except for Cinder Hill 2^nd, Little Crater 2^nd, and Paulina Lake 2 locations). Laundry service will be available at the nearby Paulina Visitor Center. Dogs must be leashed at all times and not prone to excessive barking. Due to the thick Forest and remote location, cell and internet service is not available at all campgrounds. Some positions will need to drive to the volunteer common area, “The Silo”, or near the visitor center for service.

About the Area: The Newberry Caldera is a remote location ~42 miles south of Bend, Oregon. Nearby towns are La Pine (18 miles/20-25 minutes), Sunriver (28miles/30-35 minutes), and Bend (45 miles/45-50 minutes). La Pine has a grocery store, bank, mail facilities and some additional services. All services can be found in Bend including a major medical center.

Newberry Caldera is the depression left by the collapsed summit of Newberry Volcano. The caldera has a wide variety of natural features; two spring fed lakes, obsidian flows, pumice flats, dynamic peaks and cascading waterfalls. In summer hiking, biking and horse trails are typically free of snow by late June. Recreation opportunities include hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and sky-gazing over Paulina and East Lakes within Newberry Caldera. Newberry Caldera has 1 main paved access road, 1 Visitor Center, 2 Resorts, and 6 campgrounds. Some of the campgrounds are not actually up in the Caldera but at lower elevation, what we call the “gateway” campgrounds.
