Job Description

The Pine Island (Homestead) District of Everglades National Park is seeking an enthusiastic individual or couple to volunteer. The selected candidate(s) will have the opportunity to work in our visitor center greeting visitors, answering questions and giving information. They will also be giving a variety of interpretive programs based on various natural and cultural themes.

Performs all regular duties equivalent to GS-05 Interpretive Park Ranger. This includes formal and informal interpretation. Independently researches, develops, and presents interpretive programs such as talks, walks, bicycle tours, and various other programs about park resources. Interpretive programs often cover complex and controversial natural historical and cultural themes. Programs employ appropriate interpretive techniques and devices geared to the characteristics and interests of particular audiences.

Independently operates visitor center to provide visitor information and orientation. Coordinates with other NPS offices, concessionaires, and essential cooperators. Provides interpretive and informational support services such as cleaning and maintaining equipment, maintaining bulletin boards, clerical work, and keeping statistical records.

Shifts are typically 8 hours long, and the volunteer will work 32 hours a week, which may include weekends and holidays. A valid driver’s license is required. Working conditions include standing for long periods of time.

 

DUTIES
  • Research, develop and present guided walk on the Anhinga Trail (50 minutes).
  • Research, develop and present sit down talk (20 minutes).
  • Staff Information Desk at Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center.
  • Open/Close Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center.
  • Option to research, develop and present guided bike hike (90 minutes).
  • Option to research, develop and present guided Slough Slog (guided walk in wet, wetlands. 120 minutes).
  • Option to research, develop and present Evening Program (powerpoint program presented at campground amphitheater).
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive a government vehicle. Ability to pass a government background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Winter in the South Florida tends to be mild, with warmer days but generally lower humidity. Days with extreme hot or cold are possible.
