Job Description
Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge is seeking part-time volunteers for the summer of 2021 in the eastern interior of Alaska. This opportunity is for couples who travel in their RV and enjoy working with the public and can provide light maintenance.
ABOUT THE REFUGE
Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge was established to conserve 700,000 acres of land, conserving fish and wildlife population habitats in their natural diversity, to provide interpretation and environmental education to the public and to provide subsistence hunting opportunities to rural residents. The Tetlin Refuge is visited by thousands of migratory birds each spring and fall. Bring the first refuge that visitors encounter when driving into Alaska, the Tetlin Refuge is in a location that provides the initial Alaskan experience to visitors.
Season, Schedule, and Utilities:
Volunteer hosts are scheduled 4 days a week for a total of 9 weeks. Date range is from July 12, 2021 – September 3, 2021.
Each individual will be provided with a stipend of $54.00 per each day worked, and as a couple reimbursed for up to $500.00 for travel expenses to Alaska. While on site, propane and generator fuel will be provided. Host must bring an onboard or portable generator unit if you wish to have access to electricity. Fresh water (in the form of a portable water buffalo) and a sewer dump is supplied. Laundry is available at our bunkhouse nearby.
Hosts will be living onsite at the Deadman Lake Campground in an RV campsite. RV site can accommodate up to a 60′ rig, site includes a campfire ring and a picnic table. Recreation in for form of hiking, kayaking and canoeing is close by. The campground is located 28 miles from the US/Canadian border, 70 miles from Tok. Location is remote, without cell service or ability to use satellite television. Applicants should feel comfortable living off-grid.
Expectations:
Hosts will operate two campgrounds, speaking to the public about wildlife, land conservation, and providing maps and handouts to individuals who wish to learn about the area.
Lead short guided hikes
Hosts provide light maintenance around campsites weekly, maintaining accessibility to trails, assist with projects such as painting facilities
Remove garbage from campgrounds and local sites maintained by Tetlin NWR
Clean restrooms
While volunteering for Tetlin NWR, hosts will be provided with a government vehicle and are expected to be capable of hauling a small trailer for water, firewood, and misc. supplies as business requires.
Requirements:
Hosts must provide their own self-contained RV or camp trailer to live in while onsite
Must possess current CPR and first aid certification
Must possess a valid drivers license
