ADDRESS: Caribou-Targhee National Forest; Island Park Ranger Station 3726 Highway 20; Island Park, Idaho 83429
DEPT: Forest Service
DATES: 6/12/2021 – 9/12/2021
DESCRIPTION:
Hosts are needed for the Johnny Sack Cabin, a charming, hand-built cabin on the headwaters of the Snake River. The cabin is at Big Springs, a large spring that puts out thousands of gallons of water a day and is home to many animals, birds, and fish. The Springs are in Island Park, Idaho, 30 miles from the West entrance to Yellowstone Park. The cabin is open 7 days a week from June 12 until September 12. Volunteers are expected to work 3-4 days a week. 6 hrs/day
Johnny Sack cabin is a beloved and heavily visited site. Housing is available—RV pads at the Island Park Ranger District, with electric, sewer, and water available. This is an opportunity for singles or couples.
Volunteers would open and close the cabin each day. They would perform light maintenance, sweeping and dusting and keeping the grounds tidy. There is no restroom in the cabin, but one is available in the campground, a short walk away. There are plenty of training materials at the cabin. Volunteers would talk with visitors and answer questions about the cabin and the area. Last year, due to the coronavirus, the cabin was closed, and volunteers set up tables outside for their interpretive work. It remains to be seen what will happen this year. The site is open from 10- 4. Volunteers must enjoy talking to visitors and telling the history of Johnny Sack and the cabin.
