ADDRESS: Caribou-Targhee National Forest; 1405 Hollipark Drive; Idaho Falls, Idaho 83401

DEPT: Forest Service

DATES: 6/27/2021 – 9/6/2021

DESCRIPTION: Conservation education on grizzly bears and the food storage order in campgrounds.

The Ashton-Island Park District shares the western boundary with Yellowstone National Park. Consequently, the district shares the same beautiful landscapes and wildlife, including grizzly bears! The district has 11 campgrounds, all are within grizzly bear country. For public safety and grizzly bear conservation, the district has a food storage order whereby all attractants must be stored securely from grizzly bears.

We are looking for two individuals or a couple that would like to walk through a few campsites every Friday afternoon and Saturday, looking for food storage order violations and educating campers on the food storage order. There will be a mandatory training session prior to work. Then, educators will visit campgrounds from July Fourth to Labor Day Weekend. Educators must work well with campers, campground hosts, Forest Service employees, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Educating requires friendliness, patience, and consistent and accurate messaging. Educators also produce a weekly report. This position is supervised by the Campground Bear Safety Coordinator, an Idaho Master Naturalist with special training in bear safety.
