ADDRESS: Gasquet Ranger Distrct; 10600 HWY 199; Gasquet 95543

DEPT: Forest Service

DATES: 5/17/2021 – 10/31/2021

DESCRIPTION:

Provide campground hosting for Big Flat Campground on the Smith River NRA.

Duties include but are not limited to: greeting visitors and campers, tracking campground vehicles and usage, provide information to visitors and campers, monitoring campground facilities and grounds, keep bathroom and shower facilities clean, monitor trash and recycling receptacles, address campers concerns or issues, promptly report any issues, concerns, or needs to Recreation Staff.

The campground provides multiple single-family sites for tent or camping trailers (23 sites). All sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Each site is equipped with picnic tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets are provided. Water is not available at this facility.

Big Flat Campground is a small, quiet campground bordered by Hurdygurdy Creek. Since it is far from towns and highways, it’s the perfect place to “get away from it all.” The campground is semi-open; trees shade some sites, others have part-shade. Shrubs and grass fill in between sites

River Access: There is no river access from the campground. Several nice South Fork river access points are within a half mile. Hurdygurdy Creek can be accessed from the campground as well as several points off of the “All Access Trail”

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This volunteer opportunity is on the Six Rivers National Forest, Smith River National Recreation Area. Smith River National Recreation Area is located within the Six Rivers National Forest in northwestern California. This 305,337-acre National Recreation Area (NRA) was designated by Congress in November 1990 to protect the area’s special scenic value, natural diversity, cultural and historical attributes, wilderness, wildlife, fisheries, and the Smith River watershed’s clean waters.

Recreational activities abound in the Smith River National Recreation Area or NRA. The beautiful Smith River offers fishing for steelhead, trout, and salmon. During the summer months, the pure, clean waters of the Smith River are perfect for swimming, rafting, or fishing and the forested mountainsides present occasions for hiking, bird watching, wildflower walks, or perhaps just lounging in the sun.

Summers are dry with highs in the 80-100°F degree range. Contact the NRA Headquarters at the Gasquet Ranger Station for current weather conditions.
