Job Description
Fish & Wildlife Service
DATES:
21 Pintail Ln
Natchez, Mississippi 39120
Volunteers assist in many visitor-oriented objectives such as trail maintenance, kiosk repair, mowing, gardening, environmental interpretation, nature center helper, bird surveys, and many other tasks which vary by season, such as collecting hunter harvest data. Citizen scientists are encouraged to apply! This is a great position for someone that enjoys working independently and takes pleasure in nature. Couples will be considered if we can find an appropriate position for your partner.
St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located along the Mississippi River just south of Natchez, Mississippi. It is well known for the thousands of wading birds, waterfowl, and forest birds, which utilize the dense flooded areas, swamps, bottomland forests, and uplands. Bayou Cocodrie is just across the river in Ferriday, Louisiana, and is comprised mainly of forested bottomlands and managed wetlands. These volunteer positions are primarily located at St. Catherine Creek, with one volunteer position available at Bayou Cocodrie during hunting season.
We are seeking individuals willing to volunteer throughout the year, in flexible five or six-week rotations. We will consider couples if we can find an appropriate position for your partner. Start and end dates are negotiable, and longer terms are negotiable.
HOUSING:
RV pads with electric, water, and sewer hookups are available at both refuges with a minimum six week commitment of 20 hours per week, negotiable for a longer term with a minimum of 120 hours of work per resident volunteer. Due to the remote locations of the refuges, cellular phone service is not guaranteed, but is available by the office. Inquire with the refuge manager about other on-site housing options, or if housing is not needed at all. Sorry, no pets are allowed due to wildlife considerations.
