CAMPGROUND: Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge
DEPT: Fish & Wildlife Service
AVAILABILITY: 7/22/2019–5/1/2020
RV INFORMATION: In exchange for providing 24 weekly hours of work per person, you will receive a full hookup site that resides in the volunteer village along the Bastrop Bayou portion of the refuge. The site includes picnic table, water, 30 and 50-amp electricity, sewage, propane, and a community building laundry facility with internet connection. The volunteer village provides proximity to the local beaches as well as easy access to the city of Lake Jackson which has all pleasantries such as theaters, restaurants, a shopping mall, and grocery stores. Across the street from the village is the 24 hour fishing pier on Bastrop Bayou which allows excellent opportunities for trout and flounder fishing with easy access to a public boat ramp. We are requesting three months of volunteer service. Preference goes to volunteers whom are able to provide a longer commitment.Please feel free to call or contact us with questions or concerns. This wildlife refuge lies along the Gulf Coast of Brazoria county Texas, making it a vital estuary habitat that fosters hundreds of both aquatic and terrestrial animal species. It is a birding hotspot, known for hosting an immense population of migratory birds as well as local nesters that attract avid photographers and birders alike. During the summer months, the refuge focuses heavily on promoting wildlife habitats by educating the public on land management and providing summer camps for young students with passion for environmental sciences. As the school year begins, there will be more focus on refuge field trips and educating students from the local Brazosport school district. Opportunities Responsibilities for our volunteers include: assisting in educating young and local students at our semi-weekly field trips, assisting with special events and outreach, interacting with visitors and providing information on our trails, auto tour, and public use opportunities, janitorial upkeep of the interior and exterior of public use areas, manning the information desk, maintaining plant health in our green house, and assisting with clerical office work. Additional duties may vary on individual interests, talents, and skills, but the requested volunteer hours will be 24 hours per person per week.
