FROM: https://www.volunteer.gov/s/volunteer-opportunity/a09SJ000004mzDN
ADDRESS: 5 Miles north of Moab, Utah, on US 191 Moab, Utah, 84532
DATES: 2025-03-01
DEPT: National Park Service
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Arches National Park is looking for couples or individuals to serve as volunteer campground hosts at Devils Garden Campground during the 2025 season. Camp hosts must serve a minimum of one month, however, more than one month is preferred.
Vacancies: The RV site is available for any month between March and November.
Hosts must provide their own RV/trailer. Water, sewer, propane, and 20/30/50 amp solar-powered electrical hook-ups are provided free of charge. You will have access to a washer and dryer unit at staff housing located near the visitor center (18 miles from the campground). Monetary stipends are NOT offered.
The Devils Garden Campground has 54 individual sites (no utilities), 2 group sites (no utilities), 3 bathrooms (with running water/flush toilets), and an amphitheater. The campground is located near the end of the park’s 18-mile scenic road and can feel remote at times. There are no restaurants, Wi-Fi, gas, or shower facilities in the campground or the park. Cell service is extremely spotty throughout the campground and the park. The City of Moab is three miles from the park entrance (about 22 miles from the campground) and has all services and amenities available. There are plenty of activities to do and places to visit in the area on your days off.
Arches National Park is home to the largest concentration of natural stone openings in the world with over 2,000 arches and natural bridges. The stunning landscape also boasts sandstone spires and balancing rocks towering over high desert vegetation, providing habitat to snakes, lizards, rabbits, foxes, mule deer, and mountain lion. Spring and Fall are the most popular times in the park as mild temperatures provide for pleasant hiking. A snowstorm or two may occur in early Spring or late Fall but the snow will usually melt away within a day or two. Temperatures in the summer can reach over 100 degrees F during the day, but the warm summer nights are perfect for watching the stars.
Campground Host Duties:
Volunteers will work 4 days on and 4 days off, rotating with another set of hosts. Ideally, applicants will have previous experience in this role, but applicants with no experience will be considered. You must be able to work well with little to no supervision and make decisions independently. You can expect to work 32+ hours per week performing the following duties:
- Assist park visitors with campground vacancy, fee, and registration information.
- Perform campground compliance checks using the reservation system Daily Arrival Report (DAR).
- Keep camping areas clean, organized, and presentable; e.g. performing routine litter removal, occasional fire pit cleaning, and minor maintenance in the campground as necessary. Communicate with maintenance staff for larger issues.
- Educate visitors about campground regulations, such as dogs off leash or generator hours. Work independently to resolve minor issues. Work with law enforcement rangers to resolve larger issues.
- Answer questions about Arches National Park and the surrounding federal, state, and county recreation areas; inform visitors about safety and resource protection concerns in the campground, park overlooks, and park trails.
- Rove nearby trails, interacting with visitors, noting and reporting resource damage, if any, walking on uneven terrain (including rock and sand) in a variety of temperatures and weather, and keeping the trail guides stocked.
- Perform all duties in a safe, professional, and respectful manner, and provide excellent customer service.
- Wear the NPS volunteer uniform according to written standards.
- Support search and rescue operations by providing trailhead checks and acting as a radio relay. Optional: to help with the more physical elements of rescues, such as carry-outs, hosts are required to attend basic Search and Rescue training provided in-house.
- You will NOT be cleaning bathrooms.
