DESCRIPTION:

The Volcano Adventure Camp Host will be asked to assist youth camping groups and provide a positive National Park Service presence. The volunteer’s primary purpose is to provide emergency communications via radio to park first responders should there be a need at the VAC (Volcano Adventure Camp).

 

Duties: Serves as nighttime contact for emergency situations. Uses park radio to communicate with and request assistance from first responders. Represents the park at the VAC. Answers questions, distributes information, and checks for compliance of regulations. Assists in educating visitors about safety and regulations. Assists with reservations including posting and tracking reserved sites, check-in, and check-out. May occasionally assist with trail roving and supporting formal interpretation programs. Provides information about trails within the park and uses a park radio to communicate emergency situations when roving.  Volunteer may be asked to assist at visitor contact stations, other campgrounds, and can be assigned other duties as needed.

 

DUTIES

Time Commitment: A minimum of 32 hours per week for at least two consecutive weeks and up to three months between June 18 and September 18, 2023. Presence is required at the camp during the night when groups are present.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Desired: Should be friendly, eager to help, and good with kids. Must drive and work in a remote area in a safe manner. Must have a valid State driver’s license to operate a park vehicle.

 

Special Requirements: Serving as a volunteer is entirely at the volunteer’s request and choice, and no request or requirement has been made by the NPS. Serving as a volunteer is not a prerequisite for the NPS’s decision whether or not to employee or re-employee volunteer as an employee in the future. Volunteer has been given no promise or expectation of future employment as a result of volunteer service. Volunteer is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the United States.

 

Host wears a VIP uniform and/or nametag and returns uniform to the VIP Coordinator at the end of the season.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Park provides campsite in VAC with water and sewer. Site can accommodate an RV up to 35’ long. Additional vehicle and three screen rooms/tents allowed in site. Company with additional tents and vehicles must occupy and pay for additional campsites. The VAC does not have electricity. Solar panels and batteries may used as well as a generator during designated hours. Host will be provided a radio and training to assist with operational and emergency communications.

 

Safety is first at Lassen Volcanic. Camp host is expected to maintain basic safety equipment and wear appropriate clothing. It is the responsibility of the volunteer to wear safety gear when applicable including gloves, sun and insect protection. Volunteer may not knowingly participate in any law enforcement activity that would potentially place one in a life-threatening situation.
