Steel Creek Campground Host

Are you looking for a fulfilling outdoor experience? Join us as a Volunteer Campground Host at Steel Creek Campground, located along America’s First National River, Buffalo National River. This area is perfect for fishing, hiking, night sky viewing, and kayaking!

Ideal candidates are outdoor enthusiasts with strong communication skills and a willingness to learn. Customer service experience is a plus and the volunteer must have their own RV.

General Campground Host Duties:

Welcome campers and be the first-person informal contact for visitors and campers to Buffalo National River!

Assist campers with finding sites and direct them with how to make a reservation using recreation.gov, as needed. Note: Fees are not collected by volunteers.

Make regular rounds, using an electric UTV that is provided by the park, to monitor compliance, update statistics, and report any law enforcement issues to park dispatch.

Remain in the campground throughout the day to be available to visitors.

Serve as a resource for campers and answer questions about Buffalo National River, the campground, hiking trails, river access points, local amenities and services, area recreational opportunities, and park regulations. Contact park officials to answer unique/difficult questions.

Report any maintenance needs to park staff as reported by campers.

Educate visitors on park rules, assist after hours when needed, and serve as a positive example by maintaining your own campsite.

Coordinate your schedule with the Volunteer Supervisor and track volunteer hours consistently.

Wear the NPS volunteer uniform, follow safety protocols, and help create a safe and enjoyable environment for all.

Commitment:

As a campground host, you must be readily available to assist campers. There is a minimum of 32 hours per week/5 days a week commitment to volunteer for this position and a minimum 3-month stay. Days off will be during the week. This position requires you to possess your own RV or camper. Cell service is unavailable in the campground. Wi-Fi is not provided in the campground but is likely to be available at the ranger station located near the host site. A laundry facility is located near the host site for use.

Note: Steel Creek Campground has 40 sites, including walk-in tent sites and primitive drive-in horse-only sites. The host site has water and electricity. Sewer hookup at the site is not available, but there is a sewer connection that can be utilized for dumping close to the host site. The closest town, Jasper, is 25 minutes away and has basic amenities available. The town of Harrison is approximately 45 minutes away and has many shopping, dining, and health care options.

Physical Requirements & Health Considerations:

Camp host volunteers must be able to stand, sit, and work for extended periods of time.

This position requires you to work in varying weather conditions including elevated temperatures, sun exposure, high humidity, rain, wind, etc.

Must be comfortable communicating with park staff on a handheld radio.

Must be comfortable walking on uneven terrain.

Must be able to work independently.

Must be comfortable taking supervision and feedback.
