DESCRIPTION:
This volunteer (VIP) position works with the Division of Interpretation at Cedar Breaks National Monument. Astro VIPs support astronomy and dark sky education and outreach efforts at Cedar Breaks by assisting with and leading formal and informal astronomy programs both within the park and at offsite locations. Astro VIPs may also be called upon to assist with other aspects of park interpretive operations.
Brief Description of Work to be Performed:
• Assist with astronomy programs by conducting telescope viewing, presenting constellation tours or talks, assisting with crowd management, and responding to visitor inquiries about astronomy.
• Promote (without preaching) the benefits of night sky preservation and light pollution reduction (astronomy, ecology, health, economics, cultural identity, etc.)
• Independently conduct daytime solar viewing sessions using properly filtered solar telescopes.
• Independently lead evening stargazing programs in the park campground.
• Conduct or assist with dark sky monitoring projects by taking SQM measurements or digital photographs of the night sky at Cedar Breaks.
• Provide informal interpretation at park overlooks and on hiking trails to enhance the visitor experience at Cedar Breaks.
• Periodically staff the park information center and Family Discovery Center, providing park and general information to the public.
• Other collateral duties as assigned to support the park interpretation program.
