DESCRIPTION:
Join the Interpretation team at Chiricahua National Monument in southeastern Arizona! This 32 hour per week (8 hour shifts, 4 days a week) volunteer position is based at the visitor center to greet visitors, provide park and local area information, and answer questions. Trailer or recreational vehicle length limit is 29 feet.
Join the team at Chiricahua National Monument! We are currently seeking motivated volunteers that want to be a part of a great team serving visitors at a beautiful and unique park. Volunteer work will be completed indoors, in the park visitor center, and outdoors, while roving the park. Training and orientation will be provided. This position may require long periods of standing. Volunteers also assist the park with Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) efforts to ensure visitor safety on trails. PSAR responsibilities include roving parking areas and hiking trails to educate visitors about safely hiking in summer conditions. An ability to hike up to 3 miles a day is required. A minimum of 32 hours per week is required; a work week includes 8 hour shifts, 4 days a week.
Volunteers will live on site in the Bonita Canyon Campground. RV spaces can accommodate trailers or motorhomes up to 29 feet. RVs must be furnished by the volunteer; the park does not provide RVs or other housing accommodations. Full hook-ups are available (electricity, water, and sewage), as is wifi service and a landline telephone. Cell coverage is limited in the park.
Volunteers may be required to operate a government vehicle. A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Volunteers will wear a uniform which will be provided by the park.

DUTIES
· Work in the park visitor center
· Rove the park, greet, and welcome visitors
· Answer questions and provide orientation about the park and area
· Assist with PSAR efforts to support visitor safety in the park
· Assist our cooperating association with bookstore sales and operate a cash register
· Assist with park special events, such as astronomy and night sky programs
QUALIFICATIONS
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
· Retail sales experience helpful, but not required
· Familiarity with park policies and regulations (Training will be provided)
· Comfortable walking or hiking up to 3 miles at an elevation between 5,400-7,000 feet
· Enthusiasm for public service

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is ideal for anyone looking to be part of an energetic team and to be engaged in a variety of operations. You will spend your day introducing visitors to the geology, history, and flora and fauna of the Chiricahua Mountain Range, part of the Sky Islands. While roving the park, you will be surrounded by amazing rhyolite rock formations and you may see unique wildlife, such as coatimundi. You will have the opportunity to meet and interact with people from all over the country and the world. Through education and interpretation, volunteers support the park’s mission of preserving and protecting the park’s cultural and natural resources.
The park has 17 miles of day-use hiking trails and is surrounded by the Coronado National Forest for backpacking opportunities. Local points of interest include Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Coronado National Memorial, Tombstone, and Bisbee.
Chiricahua NM is located in a remote area of southeastern Arizona. The nearest grocery store, medical care, and other services are located in Willcox, AZ, 37 miles to the northwest. More services and amenities are located in Tucson AZ, approximately 120 miles to the west. Volunteers will need a reliable means of transportation while working at the park.
All work will be completed in accordance with park safety protocols to ensure a safe work environment for staff, and to ensure a safe visitor experience for the public.
