DESCRIPTION

Volunteer Activities• Other • Visitor Information Photo Courtesy of FS DescriptionGreen Cove Station was built by the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1914, and positioned on a stretch of track between Abingdon, Virginia and West Jefferson, North Carolina.  The train and the line, became known as the Virginia Creeper because of its slow speed going up and over the mountains.  Green Cove is the only original passenger station remaining on what was the Abingdon Branch. This position is a great opportunity! The Virginia Creeper Trail is a 34 mile rail-trail from Whitetop to Abingdon, Virginia. It is located on the former Norfolk & Western Railroad and now hosts over 200,000 bicycle riders each year. Volunteers are needed to help staff Green Cove Station Visitor Center, an original depot that served as post office, general store, and freight office and is located adjacent to the trail. Volunteers will serve 6 to 8 hours per day for 2 to 5 days per week. This allows time to experience the Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area on your days off. The station is open from April thru October. Duties include visitor information, selling interpretive materials, and light cleaning. Housing and reimbursement may be available. Volunteers that have worked at Green Cove in the past consider it an excellent experience. Because of the large amount of visitors to the station, we prefer that this position be handled by a duo of volunteers. Please call for more information on this great opportunity! For additional information, please contact  Viviana Ruiz, Partnerships, Volunteers and Service Coordinator at viviana.ruiz@usda.gov or  at (276) 783-5196 or (800) 628-7202. The merchandise in this visitor is provided by The Friends of Mount Rogers to enhance visitor experience and for the purpose of supporting the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.
