DESCRIPTION

Number of Volunteers Needed: 1-2  Contact: Interp VIP Supervisor Jamie Kennedy (jamie_kennedy@nps.gov) Required Time Commitment:  15 hours per week if residing outside the park; 24 hours per week if occupying a volunteer RV site. Duties: Interpretive Birding guides lead guided interpretive bird tours and talks for the visiting public, developing and conducting birding classes on a weekly basis.  This is done with the use of a park vehicle to safely transport visitors around the park to different birding locations.  During these talks, information regarding safety concerns, conservation efforts, and the ecology of migratory and nesting birds is shared with those in attendance. Skills: Some knowledge of birds that either reside within or migrate through Padre Island National Seashore and the ability to use a spotting scope is preferred.  Candidates must work well with visitors, be courteous, friend, and willing to answer many repetitive questions, remain calm and courteous during occasional hectic and emergency situations, and communicate effectively with the public and park personnel.  Familiarity with the cultural and natural history of the area is preferred but not necessary, as is familiarity with park regulations and safety procedures.  A valid driver’s license is required. Goals & Outcomes: The goal of this position is to assist the park in protecting the spectacular and valuable resources of Padre Island National Seashore, as well as assist visitors by providing information on significant ecological and cultural topics.
