Wildlife abound; yet still only over an hour’s drive to New York City. The refuge currently owns over 6,000 acres with 10 miles of the gently flowing Wallkill River running through it. Within the refuge boundary are 5 hiking trails including a portion of the Appalachian Trail. There are three designated kayak/canoe access points along the river as well as a 50 acre lake with a handicapped fishing dock and kayak launch. The refuge headquarters is located in a beautifully renovated farm house. We are a small, friendly staff that enjoys what we do and are looking for the right individual or couple to compliment our team. The refuge is seeking 1-2 visitor services volunteers for the 2020 summer season. Duties include: Providing public educational outreach programs throughout the summer related to the refuge, wildlife, outdoor recreation, etc. for adults, children, and families. Kayak and archery program equipment are available for volunteers with the appropriate training (FWS kayak trip leader certification, National Archery in the Schools Program certification). We may be able to provide this training as time allows. Assist with special events which include: Disabled Veteran’s Fishing Day, Cops & Bobbers Fishing Events, Urban Youth Retreat Day, Festival of Wood and others. Maintain brochure stock at trailhead kiosks & office lobby. Greet visitors and assist with Interagency Pass sales. A complete hook-up; water, electricity, free propane, and laundry facilities are provided in exchange for a minimum of 24 hours per week for a single volunteer and 32 hours per week for a volunteer couple.
