DESCRIPTION:

Volunteers make all the difference in providing visitors with an enjoyable experience in the park!

Volunteers work with the maintenance staff performing custodial cleaning of all park facilities. This includes campground restrooms, park offices and facilities, the Visitor Center, backcountry campground facilities occasionally, and trash pick-up. The job can encompass additional tasks such as picnic table rehab, recycle of cans, painting of signs, highway clean-up, and other miscellaneous park projects. Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of 4-6 months with a work schedule of four 6 to 8-hour days each week and are provided with an RV site with full hook-ups. The park does not have lodging available other than the volunteer RV sites.

Housing Description: The park does not have lodging available other than the volunteer RV sites. Volunteers will provide their own RV. The park provides a level concrete pad for RV with full hookups in a small separate campground for VIPs only. In the VIP campground is a building with laundry facilities, freezers, showers, toilet, outdoor grill and socializing space.

 

 

DUTIES:

Clean all park facilities (campgrounds, restrooms, park offices and facilities, visitor center, backcountry campground facilities.
Trash pick-up.
Additional tasks may include:
Picnic table rehab.
Painting signs.
Highway clean up.
Miscellaneous park projects. Compliance:
Report potential safety or guest issues to supervisor.
Follow park rules, regulations, procedures, and federal policies.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:

Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and courteous manner.
Ability to drive a government vehicle and safely transport passengers, supplies, and equipment.
Must have a valid state driver’s license to be able to operate any government vehicle.
Ability to pass federal background check.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The position involves active physical outdoor activities, standing on hard surfaces, walking on pavement and uneven surfaces, along with moderate lifting of boxes of maps and handouts. Work includes, walking, bending, stooping, and lifting.
Volunteers preform work indoors and outdoors which results in exposure to extremes of temperatures, rain, wind, and direct sunlight. Weather conditions can range from daytime high temperatures in the 90s to overnight lows in the 20s. Temperatures may exceed 100 degrees during late spring and into summer. Wind conditions can be of concern. ▪ Work involves walking on rough uneven surfaces and terrane.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
SAFETY:

Safety is our top priority and volunteers are an important part our safety program where everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.
Volunteer will perform work safely, always wear personal protective equipment (PPE), and follow all safety policies, rules, regulations. Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument Volunteer Program – Position Description Updated 11/2020 (CS)
Volunteer will report all accidents to supervisor and volunteer coordinator immediately and no later than the end of the workday.
Volunteer will report all near-miss accidents to supervisor and volunteer coordinator as soon as possible and always before the end of the workday.
Volunteers will follow all agency, local, state, and federal safety rules, regulations, and laws.
Volunteers will review, use, and follow Job Hazard Analysis (JHA), and Job Safety Analysis (JSA).
Volunteers will properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Volunteers will follow all agency guidance and CDC guidelines relevant to COVID-19 to ensure their safety, the safety of NPS staff, and our visitors.

 

UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS:

The park will provide two short or long sleeve tan work shirts (with a VIP patch on the sleeve) ball cap or brimmed hat (with a VIP patch), a windbreaker (with VIP patch), and a VIP identification nametag. Volunteers will provide twill or cotton trousers tan or brown in color. Jeans, regardless of color, are not an approved volunteer uniform item.

 

TIME COMMITMENT AND SCHEDULE:
Volunteers work a minimum of 4-6 months with a work schedule of four 8-hour days each week and provided with an RV site with full hook-ups.
The park does not have lodging available other than the volunteer RV sites.
Volunteer shifts include working nights, holidays, and weekends as assigned.
Either the volunteer or the park’s volunteer coordinator can terminate an Agreement for Voluntary Services at any time.

 

SUPERVISOR:

Custodial supervisor with oversight by the Chief of Facilities
The Volunteer coordinator will handle volunteer matters.

VEHICLE USE:

Volunteers will be assigned van driver duties and drive other government vehicle as assigned.
Government vehicles are used for government related business to provide transportation to visitors for guided van tours and hiker shuttles, or other government business.
Personal vehicles will be used for personal business.
A valid state driver’s license is required to operate any government vehicle and must be presented to the Volunteer Coordinator when reporting for duty.

RV ACCOMMODATIONS:

Volunteers: a campsite with full hookups in the volunteer RV loop located in the employee housing area. Sites can accommodate RV’s up to 40 feet in length.
Propane is provided and volunteer must take their tank to the maintenance yard during a designated day of the week for refilling.
A minimum of 32 volunteer hours per week is required to qualify to RV site assignment.

 

OTHER FACILITIES:

Volunteer facilities are available at the Volunteer RV loop in the employee housing area and include the use of freezer space, washers, dryers, indoor showers and restroom, indoor and outdoor dining and social area. Propane BB grill and recreational use of the Smith Building.
