DESCRIPTION:
River Forest is a shaded group camping facility on the shores of the St. Johns River in Ocala National Forest. Located just across the river from Deland, the site is popular for groups, family reunions and weddings and can accommodate up to 125
This position requires on site residence at River Forest Group Camp. The area is open only to group use reservations. The host(s) is required to open and close the gate for group use. River Forest can accommodate up to 125 people. User amenities include new bathrooms with warm showers, screened pavilion, grills, group fire pit, and access to the St. Johns River. River Forest receives year-round use from groups of all sorts.
DUTIES
The duties of the host include providing information to forest users and providing maintenance and security for the River Forest facility. Campground hosts may be required to monitor the campers and address minor compliance issues such as, pets off of leash/in buildings, or noise.
Some of the maintenance duties for this area include assisting the recreation staff with:
Daily cleaning/tidying of restrooms
Litter pick-up and garbage removal (there are dumpsters on site)
Removing dirt, mildew, and spider webs from signs, buildings, garbage containers, and tables
General landscape maintenance as needed (mowing, trimming shrubbery, raking of leaves, etc)
Sweeping sidewalks and shelters
Minor repairs and maintenance to buildings and grounds under the advice of District recreation technicians
Chlorine residual testing 2-3 times per week
QUALIFICATIONS
Volunteers must have a friendly, helpful manner and enjoy dealing with a variety of people. They should have some familiarity with the natural environment of the campground, and be able to share this basic knowledge with visitors. Good communication skills, tactfulness, and patience are important. The volunteer must always remember that visitors are associating them with the US Forest Service – a public service agency funded by the taxpayers.
