Join the Petrified Forest Team!

Petrified Forest National Park is seeking dynamic, dedicated, and happy volunteers to help with visitor services! Petrified Forest protects over 221,000 acres of the painted desert that contains fossils, archaeology sites, and an abundance of petrified wood. Each year Petrified Forest is visited by half a million visitors. Volunteers play an important role in helping these visitors plan their visit to the park by providing park information over the phone, in person at a visitor centers and on trails throughout the park.

 

Volunteers work up to 32 hours consisting of 8 hour days. If desiring an on-site RV pad with hook-ups (water, sewer, electric), a minimum of 24 hours per week per person is required for 3 months. A minimum of 3 months is required but 6 months is preferred. Priority is given to those who can stay the entire 6 months. Couples wishing to apply should complete an application for each person.

 

Area Information

RV/trailer sites are located on the North end of the park in the visitor center complex. Petrified Forest is in a remote location off of I-40 with the nearest grocery stores located in Gallup NM (75 miles) and Holbrook, AZ (21 miles). Medical care facilities are located in Show Low, AZ (90 miles) and Flagstaff, AZ (132 miles).

 

DUTIES
Greeting and orienting visitors to park and surrounding area
Answering questions about park history and surrounding area
Roving trails and overlooks, making informal visitor contacts
Presenting interpretive programs to general public, if interested
Assisting with education programs, if interested
Leading guided hikes, if interested
Providing park information over the phone responding to messages
Responding to information request
Assisting with special park events

QUALIFICATIONS
Be willing to work with other staff in a positive manner
Be able to answer visitor questions, rove trails and lead tours
Ability to stand for long periods of time
Ability to hiking and walking on trails with uneven terrain
Able to work independently with little supervision
Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
Please include whether or not you have any previous volunteer experience with a federal agency under Work/Volunteer Experience on you application.
