DESCRIPTION:

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking an individual or couple (preferred) to fill one Day Use Park Attendant position at Boomer Park for the 2023 recreation season.

W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir is seeking an individual or couple (preferred) to fill one Park Attendant position at Boomer Park for the 2023 recreation season from May 1 to Labor Day. Two sets of Park Attendants will be assigned to the park with both sets of attendants sharing responsibilities. Attendants must provide their own RV/Travel Trailer and reside on a designated campsite inside the assigned park during the duration of the season. See amenities in Housing/Amenities section.

 

Attendants will work on a rotating 4 days on/4 days off schedule. Attendants will work 25-30 hours per week (25 hours for an individual, 30 shared hours for couples). The Recreation Ranger will identify the clock hours necessary to provide optimum coverage and services to visitors. Couples do not have to work together but may share hours (i.e., one individual works the first 4 hours then the other individual works the second 4 hours). Attendants must be available to open and close the gates daily and must be available to operate the gatehouse and/or perform park management duties. Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays are heavily visited days by the public. Days on/off will be coordinated with and scheduled by the Volunteer Coordinator or Recreation Program Ranger. DUTIES

When scheduled or on duty, attendants will:

1.   Wear issued volunteer clothing.

2.   Open park gates at 8am and close park gates at 8pm.

3.   Ensure automated fee machine is operating properly.

4.   Promote water safety and maintain life jacket loaner stations.

5.   Conduct checks of the area and park facilities for cleanliness and perform light general maintenance as needed.

6.   Ensure picnic shelters are posted when reserved.

7.   Monitor parking and capacity limits.

8.   Sell passes and/or inform visitors of how to obtain and display day use passes.

9.   Inform visitors of park rules, regulations, and policies.

10.  Answer visitor questions regarding recreation opportunities.

11.  Collect comment cards and surveys.

12.  Relay complaints, compliance issues, overcrowding, and maintenance actions to Park Ranger staff.

13.  Report administratively to the Volunteer Coordinator and functionally to the Recreation Ranger.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Description of Qualifications:

  1. Prior camping experience.
  2. Prior experience with customer service.
  3.  Ability to sit or stand for significant periods of time. Friendly, cheerful, organized, and professional manner.
  4. Basic administrative skills.
  5. Basic maintenance skills.
  6. Physical ability to lift approximately 30 pounds and carry for 25 feet.
  7. Desire to meet and interact with people from varied backgrounds.
  8. Appearance should be neat and reflect positively on the Corps.
  9. Ability to remain calm in busy situations.
  10. Visually able to spot safety hazards and take prompt appropriate action to correct in accordance with training provided.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Attendants will work both independently and with USACE staff, volunteers, and contractors. Work will be partly indoors when operating a gatehouse and partly outdoors when performing park management duties. Work will involve frequent interaction with adults and children. Climbing stairs/steps may be required on occasions as some areas have multiple levels.

The lake is located within a 15–20-minute drive of restaurants, grocery stores, retail stores, auto and RV repair shops, entertainment venues, and medical facilities. Average high temperatures range from low 70’s to high 80’s with average low temperatures ranging from low 50’s to high 60’s during May to September. On average, Wilkesboro has 213 sunny days and gets 50 inches of rain per year.

Free full hookups (water, electric, and sewer) will be provided in exchange for volunteer service. Internet access is available at the gatehouses and Volunteer Village. Laundry facilities are located at Volunteer Village.
