DESCRIPTION:

The Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth, Washington has a need for a volunteer/onsite hatchery host to assist with visitor services and light maintenance. The hatchery host will help create a pleasant and educational visitor experience in a well-maintained facility. Each host will be required to volunteer 20-25 hours per week.

The Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery in Leavenworth, Washington has a need for a volunteer/onsite hatchery host to assist with visitor services and light maintenance. The hatchery host will help create a pleasant and educational visitor experience in a well-maintained facility. Nearly 70,000 people visit Leavenworth NFH each year and many come during the summer to learn about the hatchery, hike the nature trail, and enjoy the 170-acre setting. The hatchery is 2 miles from Leavenworth, a popular destination for visitors and in the Icicle Valley, a popular recreation area and gateway to a spectacular wilderness area. Each host will be required to volunteer 20-25 hours per week.

DUTIES

Visitor services duties include greeting visitors, providing information about the hatchery, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, salmon, and the local area. Providing informal and scheduled tours for a wide variety of visitors and groups. Assisting with visitors and special events held on hatchery grounds on weekends and evenings (Summer Theater performances, Salmon Festival, Kinderfest). Work with hatchery staff and Friends of Northwest Hatcheries to prepare for the special events. Light maintenance duties include cleaning up trash, debris, and weeds on the nature trail and at the public fishing access site, sign upkeep, cleaning and organizing equipment and materials used in the visitor center, and other projects. Maintains and advocates for a safe environment for themselves and visitors including situations related to water safety, wildlife safety, and community health.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Outgoing person who enjoys interacting with a variety of people • Strong communication, and visitor/customer service skills • Knowledge of or eagerness to learn about the hatchery, history, fish culture, salmon life cycle and other topics to provide hatchery tours • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors and move independently through visitor center and hatchery grounds including ADA accessible trails • Flexible, adaptable, creative, patient • Ability to work independently and on a team

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Indoor work is in a climate-controlled visitor center. Outdoor work can be in a wide range of temperatures, from the 30s in spring/fall to over 100 degrees in the summer. There is the potential to encounter hazardous wildlife including black bears, venomous snakes and stinging/biting insects. The elevation of the hatchery is at 1100 feet. Aspects of this position include work around open water.
