DESCRIPTION
Volunteer Activities DescriptionIntroduction This position is located at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The incumbent is responsible for performing maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities. The volunteer will report to the Administrative Office and/or Housing Manager. Major Duties (Volunteers will not be required to perform any task that he/she feels is beyond their physical limits or training.) Actively participates in a safe workplace culture. Performs maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment, and related utilities. Assists higher graded maintenance workers or tradesmen in the performance of their work, and works independently on various projects. Obtains, carries, lifts and positions equipment, parts and tools needed for installation and repair. Performs specifically assigned tasks such as removing floor tile, roofing, insulation, paint, etc. Follows established safety procedures and practices when using hand and power equipment. Performs routine plumbing repairs, including: cuts pipe to marked size; cuts or drills holes as marked; screws, bolts or attaches hangers; caulks or seals areas as directed; tightens connections and valves; uses plunger or snake to unclog drains; threads pipe as directed, where tools have been set up by others; and performs other similar tasks following very specific instructions. Performs minor carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools to cut, drill and assemble work products. Performs minor electrical repairs such as replacing light bulbs and switches and hanging fixtures. Changes filters in HVAC equipment. Performs routine painting work to include covering items with drop cloths; clearing the work area; setting up and securing scaffolding; and preparing the surfaces for drywall finishing by spackling, taping and sanding surfaces. Cleans tools and equipment and keeps work areas clean and orderly. Performs routine maintenance on campground sites and trails using hand tools to re-grade and reset barriers to restore areas to original appearances. Collects trash and debris from trails, campgrounds and common areas. Performs routine landscaping work to include operating push and riding mowers, power edgers and trimmers. Prepares ground for planting, lays sod and plants flowers or shrubs per simple drawings. Occasionally operates a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport supplies, materials, equipment and tools to and from work sites while assisting on project work. Loads and unloads vehicles by hand. Ensures that cargo is properly secured and protected from the weather. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required Knowledge of simple and common trade practices. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team to assist other personnel during work assignments. Knowledge of safety procedures, including how to lift and move heavy objects, and the safe operation and control of large, riding mowers and similar types of specialized equipment. Ability to perform limited woodworking techniques and assist in assembling and installing or repairing items or structures; ability to learn the common and typical tasks of the painting trade to assist higher graded painters; and ability to use of a variety of plumbing tools, parts, equipment and materials and assist in plumbing tasks. Ability to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, putty surfaces to prepare for painting and to brush out, roll on and spray coat materials. Ability to make measurements using tape measure and square. Ability to operation and maintenance of hand and power tools to use simple hand tools such as hammer, saw, brush and roller, screwdriver, wrench, electric drill/saw and other power tools in a safe and acceptable manner. Ability to operate light vehicles and equipment such as pick-up truck. Ability to operate custodial equipment, such as buffers, polishers, shampooers, vacuums, and portable pumps. Ability to operate grounds equipment such as riding mowers, push mowers, edgers, trimmers, power washers and leaf blowers. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Physical Demands Requires standing for long periods of time. Work requires light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs. May be required to lifts, carry and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Physical effort and coordination are required in operating park vehicles and equipment. Work Environment Volunteer is exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Must be able to work both indoors and out in all types of weather situations. Outer Banks weather is notoriously unpredictable and can change quickly. The area experiences thunderstorms, high winds, rain, high heat, extreme cold, tornadoes or waterspouts, and hurricanes. It is often hot and humid and sometimes the heat index exceeds 100 °F. Temperatures can drop below freezing in the winter months. The Seashore is also home to a number of insects including biting flies, chiggers, mosquitos, sand gnats, and ticks. Work Schedule The volunteer will agree to a regular schedule of eight hours per shift or a revised schedule at discretion of supervisor. Volunteer will notify the volunteer supervisor of planned absences within a reasonable amount of time, usually not less than one week, or as soon as possible when the volunteer cannot be available to perform scheduled duties due to sickness or other reasons. Uniform When working within the housing area, a uniform is not required except a volunteer nametag and ballcap (provided). While working in public view, a uniform is required: NPS volunteer shirt and name tag (provided), and the volunteer will supply his/her own khaki pants, brown belt, and brown shoes. The volunteer should look professional at all times and follow the Outer Banks Group’s volunteer uniform policy. Volunteer must wear toe-closed footwear. Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as needed to perform assigned tasks. This includes, but not limited to, eye protection, ear protection, gloves and dusk masks. Government Vehicles & Property / Personal Equipment The volunteer may only drive a government vehicle if indicated on the Volunteer Services Agreement (Form 301A) and with a cleared driver’s license check. The volunteer must possess a valid state driver’s license and have it checked by a government official (supervisor.) Volunteer may not use government vehicles for any reason without prior approval from his/her direct supervisor. Volunteer will not be using a government computer. Volunteer’s personal vehicles/equipment will not be used while on duty. Housing To occupy park quarters/trailer sites, the volunteer must provide at least 32 hours of service per week for at least six weeks, not to exceed six months.
