DESCRIPTION:
This moderately strenuous volunteer position will assist with upkeep and maintenance of a historic orchard, located in the Lonely Dell Ranch, within the Lees Ferry District at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. (32 hours/week, with at least 1 month commitment)
This volunteer position will assist with upkeep and maintenance of a historic orchard, located in the Lonely Dell Ranch, within the Lees Ferry District at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Lonely Dell Ranch is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and protects a historic ranch and homestead landscape. The current orchard includes nearly 250 trees, which are maintained using historic care techniques to contribute to the historic landscape. Fruit in the orchard is available for visitors to pick in the summer months. Pruning takes place in the winter when trees are dormant. Volunteer work will focus on tree pruning, using hand tools. Additional work may include deepening or cleaning out irrigation ditches, weeding and grounds care, trash clean up, weeding, watering plants, minor repairs to irrigation systems, and minor building and grounds repair such as painting. The volunteer will also provide informal information to visitors to the Lonely Dell Ranch. An RV parking space is available in the Lees Ferry Campground, for a volunteer willing to work a minimum of 32 hours/week. Amenities include water, electrical, and septic hook-ups. Laundry is not available. Cell signal in Lees Ferry is somewhat limited.
DUTIES
· Pruning orchard fruit trees using hand tools
· Maintaining orchard irrigation systems through cleaning out of silt, leaves, and weeds
· Assisting with orchard grounds maintenance, including weeding
· Interacting with visitors to discuss the historic orchard and the historic Lonely Dell Ranc
QUALIFICATIONS
The volunteer must be comfortable working outside, including potentially in inclement weather. Duties are moderately strenuous, and may include bending, lifting, climbing, reaching, standing for extended periods of time, loading and unloading materials.
Essential duties
· Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
· Ability to use hand tools such as pruners, trimmers, saws, shovels, hoes, post-pounders, and rakes
· Some familiarity with tree pruning techniques, including trimming and cutting branches
· Ability to use hand powered tools including a leaf blower and a weeder
· Able to maintain a positive attitude and be courteous and polite to visitors
· Valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle safely

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work will take place primarily out of doors at the Lonely Dell Ranch, located in Lees Ferry, at Marble Canyon, AZ. Weather in winter/spring is cool to moderately warm, with regular sun, and periodic rain. Temperatures in February and March range from overnight lows in the 30s-40s (F) to daytime highs in the 50s-60s (F). Spring in northern Arizona can regularly include high winds. Lees Ferry is located approximately 50 miles from Page, Arizona.
