DESCRIPTION:
The Maintenance Assistant helps maintain structures, equipment, and land for the heath and safety of staff and visitors. Gain knowledge and experience in construction or related areas, share your knowledge and enthusiasm, and work with a team of dedicated and passionate people who share similar interests.
Responsibilities may include, minor construction, repair, and maintenance of facilities. Metal fabrication to include use of a plasma cutter, oxy/acetylene torch, welders, grinders, drill press, hydraulic press, milling machine, and others. Vehicle and equipment maintenance, interior and exterior painting, mowing grass, tree trimming, irrigation system repair, plumbing projects, snow plowing, clearing brush, operation of weed whips, digging, weed control, carpentry projects, janitorial duties, litter pickup, collection and emptying trash and recyclables, operation of hand and power tools. Expertise preferred in, but not limited to carpentry, plumbing, priming and painting, restroom and building cleaning. Participating in the winter elk feeding program which includes operating government vehicles and heavy equipment on a pre-arranged work schedule in order to distribute alfalfa pellets to elk on various feed grounds located on the National Elk Refuge. Work must be conducted in a safe manner at all times. Additional special projects and duties may be requested and may include weekend or holiday work.
Work Schedule
All volunteers must complete required paperwork and trainings prior to the start of their work.
Work schedules may vary, but must total a minimum of 32 hours/couple or 24 hours/individuals per week for those receiving Refuge housing.
To accommodate operations, shift work may be required and may not remain constant throughout the year.
Weekend and holiday work may be required. Lieu days may not remain consistent throughout the season.
The length of season will be agreed upon by the volunteer and Volunteer Coordinator. Changes to the season start date or end date must be discussed and approved by both parties.
Working Conditions and Requirements
Indoor and Outdoor work is required.
Work will require physical exertion, including the ability to lift 50 pounds. Average agility and dexterity are required.
Successful completion of an online defensive driving course and additional paperwork is required before driving government vehicles.
Maintenance volunteers may be required to complete documentation paperwork after tasks have been performed and additional timesheets for later entry into maintenance data reporting systems.
Knowledge/Skills Desired and/or Required: Experience using hand power tools, carpentry, heavy equipment operation, and/or other trade skills preferred. Safe operation of mowers, weed whips, hand tools, etc. requires training by a staff person at the refuge. Willingness to wear all proper personal protective equipment at all times. The position may require you to work independently or as a team.
Training/Preparation Required: To operate heavy equipment operators must be certified by the Fish and Wildlife Service with completion of online training. Once online training is complete, on the job training will be scheduled as an as-needed basis. Other training for this position will be provided by a refuge staff member. Volunteer will work closely with maintenance staff.
Other Requirements: Can be physically demanding—heavy lifting, work stooping, bending, kneeling, standing, and ladder use is required; working outdoor with potential for extreme heat, cold, and insects (ticks and mosquitoes).
