DESCRIPTION
Volunteer Activities• Construction/Maintenance • Trail/Campground Maintenance • Fish/Wildlife • General Assistance Photo Courtesy of FWS DescriptionRequirements : The Custodial Maintenance Position requires that you work three days per week, 8 hours a day for a minimum of two months (positions are available for up to 6 months, sometimes longer dependent on the quality of work performed). This position performs routine janitorial tasks in the visitor center and restrooms, headquarters offices, Bosque Lounge, along the Tour Loop and other outdoor visitor facilities. You must be able to mop floors, clean toilets, empty trash cans and recycling bins, sweep sidewalks, and run vacuum cleaners. You must possess a valid drivers license to operate government vehicles. The refuge, whenever possible, uses “green” cleaning products to promote a healthy environment and healthy working conditions for our volunteers. You will be provided with disposable gloves and all the tools needed to accomplish your tasks. Your daily duties will take you “behind the scenes” and all around the public parts of the refuge with plenty of time to stop and watch wildlife as you go through your day. Each day will end with a sense of accomplishment. Duties : Spring, Summer and Fall are quieter times on the refuge and the number of visitors is low so the cleaning work is not considered overly taxing, nor need you rush through your tasks. Your daily duties, as mentioned above, are janitorial tasks of a routine nature, usually performed independently. There is always a paid staff member on duty and though they have a full slate of duties they must perform, the staff member is available to assist you if you encounter unusually dirty conditions. You will be required to empty trash cans and recycling containers and use a vehicle to transport bags to dumpsters or recycling area. You will be required to sweep inside and outside of buildings, to mop floors, to dust, to wash windows, to clean the kitchen in the Bosque Lounge and break rooms located in various buildings, to clean toilets and bathroom fixtures and to re-stock hand soap and paper products. Assists with other projects as assigned based on the needs of the refuge. There are a number of small painting projects (mostly trim and some metal gates) that need to be completed to prevent the deterioration of structures. If you are willing these could be completed by you. Complies with volunteer uniform policy. Maintains a neat and professional appearance. Information about the local community: Recreational opportunities and weather: Bosque del Apache NWR is located 90 miles south of Albuquerque and 18 miles south of Socorro. The refuge is located in the arid zone of New Mexico and is generally quite dry. The mountain ranges to the west and the Rio Grande Valley to the east give the area a moderate climate throughout the year. Approximately 5″ of precipitation occur during the period November through March. Summers can be hot and dry. We are close to National Forests, spectacular Bureau of Land Management scenery, interesting National Park Service historic sites and state and county parks. There are numerous opportunities to hike, bike and explore historical sites as well as beautiful canyons.
