DESCRIPTION:
Volunteers welcome and serve visitors from around the world by staffing the Colter Bay visitor center information desk, answering phones, and roving popular trails, viewpoints, and parking lots to provide information and education.
Volunteers:
- Staff the information desk and answer a variety of visitor questions, including recommendations for day trip itineraries, hiking destinations, and wildlife viewing locations.
- Answer the public phone line and respond to a variety of visitor questions and needs.
- Drive a government-owned vehicle (GOV) to various trailheads and turnouts in the park, to interact with visitors, answer questions, and provide education, as needed.
- Present formal and informal interpretive programs (as needed).
- Demonstrates a courteous, customer service attitude with visitors as well as colleagues.
- Follows National Park Service, Grand Teton and work group procedures and policies.
- When in uniform or perceived to be a park representative, VIP supports and explains (or refers to someone who can) agency policies in a nonpartisan, courteous way.
- Wears volunteer uniform according to Grand Teton National Park volunteer uniform standards.
- Follows designated chain of communication and consults supervisor when uncertain.
- Contributes to a safe, positive working environment. Grand Teton has zero tolerance for hostile behavior in the workplace.
- Carry out all duties in a collaborative, professional and respectful manner.
- Uses government vehicles and equipment according to policy.
The primary duties of this position are providing excellent customer service to visitors from around the world and from diverse backgrounds. Volunteers will work with a creative and passionate team of people including other volunteers, National Park Service staff, and interns. Specific responsibilities will include answering questions and providing information at a busy visitor center desk, roving park trails and facilities to provide information, answering the general park phone line, and serving as a welcoming host to Grand Teton.
- Ability to quickly learn about park resources.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Exemplary people skills, including conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
- If operating a government vehicle, has a driver’s license and valid driving license self-certification.

The Colter Bay Visitor Center is located on the beautiful shore of Jackson Lake in the northern end of Grand Teton National Park. Colter Bay is a hub of summertime activity where popular destinations include a marina with boat rentals, boat launch, campground, lodging, general store, laundromat, visitor center, amphitheater, and more! Many visitors return year after year to this location with their families.
